Three children have had to be rescued from the River Derwent in Derby, prompting a warning about open water swimming.
Derbyshire Police were called to reports the three girls, aged between 12 and 13, had got into difficulty while swimming in the stretch of water behind the Raynesway Recycling Centre.
Officers and fire crews got the girls to safety, where they were found to be suffering from cold and shock but were otherwise unhurt.
Insp Aaron Shaw, from Derby East safer neighbourhood team, said: "The area where these children were swimming, locally known as Pebble Beach, is close to a weir and, while the water may look inviting, the current can be surprisingly strong.
"Weirs also have other structures that change the flow of the water, meaning that even strong swimmers are unable to fight against the currents they produce.
"Swimmers may also find that, if they are unable to swim back to the point where they entered the river, they are unable to get out of the river due to high-sided banks."

A young girl who was reported walking alone on a Nottinghamshire street shortly before midnight is safe at home, say police.

They had knocked on doors and used a drone and specialist dogs to search the area.
The force said they had received a call from a man at around 08:00 this morning to say she was home in Boughton after he had seen the media appeal overnight.
Insp Graham Clarke thanked those who shared the appeal and added: "A member of public called the force this morning and has now been visited by officers to confirm that a girl was on her own last night, but did return home shortly after. She is safe and well.
"Reports of this nature is something the force take hugely seriously, as you can see with the amount of resources we had in the area overnight."
