Murray sustained his latest physical problem, a groin issue, in his sleep ahead of the Miami Open in late March and pulled out of the French Open after experiencing further discomfort.

It is not believed there has been a setback in his recovery, with the 34-year-old practising at Wimbledon over the past week.

But he has decided to give himself another week of training and is planning to be back on the court for the cinch Championships at Queen's Club beginning on 14 June.

A teenager has been interviewed by police in the presence of his parents after a number of dead birds were found by members of the public in Nottinghamshire.

Police said they recently received six reports dead birds had been found in the Balderton and Barnby areas.

Anthony Nicholson, 82, who lives opposite Balderton Lake, told the force: "We found two carp and a wild Canada goose which appeared to have been barbecued.

"It happens all the time. The other day a lady came to us crying profusely. She asked us to come and have a look at what she'd found and we went down and found the big white duck, which is a bird that people were absolutely besotted with, with its neck snapped.

"A couple of mallards were suspected to have been tortured and burned. It's disgraceful."

As a result of the reports, officers and council officials took part in a number of days of "targeted" action that began last week.

A 15-year-old boy was found using a slingshot in Balderton and was just about to fire it at some local songbirds, Nottinghamshire Police said.

He was searched and interviewed with his parents later that week, the force added.

Other youths were also spoken to after being found with catapults and ball bearings, behaving antisocially and trying to evade police.

Sgt Rob Harrison said: "We've seen some really concerning behaviour aimed out our local wildlife.

"Lots of our residents have spoken about their concerns and find it really distressing to come across animals that have been deliberately killed.

"It's completely unacceptable behaviour and thankfully our undercover operation has been ousting a number of those responsible."

A near miss involving two trains in Leicestershire is to be investigated by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB).

The maintenance train carried on for about 350 metres and came to a halt where the two lines crossed.

The RAIB said the empty coaches had crossed that point less than 10 seconds earlier.

It added a preliminary investigation had found the train protection and warning system (TPWS) had engaged but not stopped the maintenance train as soon as expected.

The RAIB said it would look into the sequence of events which led to the incident, the effectiveness of the TPWS and the design of signals in the area.

  19. Stalker jailed after 'terrorising' woman for monthspublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 2 June 2021

    Sandish Shoker
    BBC News

A man who stalked and threatened a woman with a knife has been jailed.

Nottinghamshire Police said Ashley Walker began a "harrowing campaign of intimidation" against the woman between June and November 2020 after a brief relationship between them ended.

The force said the 30-year-old, of Highwray Grove, Clifton, messaged her day and night "with a mixture of threats and pleas for reconciliation", repeatedly vandalised her car and also destroyed her mobile phone.

On one occasion in September, police said Walker followed her to a party in Basford, where he stood outside with a knife making a throat slitting gesture.

A month later, as she travelled in her car with friends, Walker followed her in a taxi. After she parked up, he jumped on the bonnet, ripped off the number plate and returned later that evening to slash all four tyres and pull off the wing mirrors.

Walker was arrested and later pleaded guilty at Nottingham Crown Court to possession of a bladed article and stalking.

He was jailed for 22 months and handed a 10-year restraining order against the victim on 28 May.

Det Sgt Dave Nicks, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "This was an appalling and harrowing campaign of intimidation that left a young woman in genuine fear of her life. Walker is a violent and controlling bully who deliberately set out to terrorise a young woman – all because she did not wish to carry on a relationship with him.

"Only he can know what he hoped to gain by his disgraceful and cowardly actions, which have quite rightly earned him a significant jail sentence. Unsurprisingly his behaviour has had a very significant impact on his victim, who must now live with the trauma of what Walker put her through."

Derbyshire County Council said weekly cases of coronavirus in the Gamesley and Glossop area have gone from 22 in the last two weeks of April to 63 in the final two weeks of May.

Of these, 42 were either confirmed or suspected to be variants of concern, including the so-called Indian variant, now named the Delta variant by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Every household in Gamesley will get free PCR tests delivered to their door on 3 or 4 June.

A walk-in vaccination clinic will also be held in Gamesley on Saturday 5 June for those eligible people living in the area who have yet to take up the offer of having their first dose of the vaccine.

Derbyshire's director of public health Dean Wallace described the outbreak of Covid-19 as "concerning".

He said: "There's a real chance to stop the virus from spreading but we need the community to pull together and do the right thing and I cannot stress enough the importance of taking a test."
