Three people have been arrested after an imitation gun was pointed from a car at another vehicle.
The victim was on the A57 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire shortly after 21:00 on Friday night when he was overtaken.
A passenger in the car pointed the object at him and he pulled over to report the incident to police.
Armed police were dispatched and the suspect car was located a short time later.
Its three occupants - aged 24, 26 and 31 - were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.
A plastic toy handgun was seized.
Insp Chris Pearson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "This would have been a very frightening experience for the victim.
"Although it turned out to be a toy handgun, it would certainly have looked like a real one.
"Imitation firearms can be indistinguishable to live firearms and we will always take them very seriously when we find them."

Food waste collections are going to be paused in the Derbyshire Dales, as the district council battles with a lack of bin lorry drivers.
Residents are being told to get rid of food waste in household waste bins instead.
The council has also said, external no "excess" recycling will be collected - meaning residents need to keep all their recycling inside their blue bin - or two blue bags and a blue box.
The temporary changes will start from 26 July, and last for three months.
It comes amid a national shortage of lorry drivers, with the Road Haulage Association estimating a shortfall of about 60,000.
