An 18-year-old who showed a "staggering disregard" for public safety in two high speed pursuits with police in the same night has been detained.

Dion Mayall, of no fixed address, was seen driving a Mercedes in Newark, Nottinghamshire on 8 June.

Officers recognised the 18-year-old as having no licence and ordered him to stop but he drove away at speeds of up to 80 mph, police said.

The pursuit was abandoned for safety reasons but Mayall was seen again hours later in a car park.

He again drove at speed towards the A1 but abandoned the car in the Fernwood area. He was arrested soon after.

On 9 July at Nottingham Crown Court Mayall admitted two offences of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and two offences of fraudulently using a registration document.

He was sentenced to 15 months detention in a young offenders' institution and disqualified from driving for three years and seven months.

PC Stuart Howe said: “Mayall showed a staggering disregard not only for the police officers who pursued him, but also for the safety of other road users who he placed at intolerable risk.

"His driving was of such a poor and reckless standard that it really is just a matter of good fortune that nobody was killed or seriously injured."

  16. Gunman arrested by armed police after shots firedpublished at 14:49 British Summer Time 15 July 2021

    Alex Smith
    BBC News Online

A man has been arrested after shots were fired from a suspected blank-firing handgun in the middle of a town centre.

Nottinghamshire Police were called to Mansfield Market Place just before 23:45 last night when a member of the public saw the weapon being fired, before the gunman "walked calmly away with the weapon tucked in his trousers".

Armed police were deployed and a 37-year-old man was detained on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. He remains in custody.

The force said the weapon has been recovered and inquiries are ongoing.

Det Sgt Matthew Dumbrell said: "This would have been an extremely alarming incident for anyone who witnessed or heard it. Although no actual bullets were fired and we believe this was a blank-firing, non-lethal weapon it would certainly have sounded very much like a real handgun."

It comes after police arrested three people in Clifton on Sunday evening, when a man was seen wielding what was later found to be a BB gun.

Earlier this month, police also recovered 15 blank-firing weapons following a raid in Mansfield Woodhouse.
