  3. Cordon at house lifted as search continues for missing manpublished at 12:01 British Summer Time 5 August 2021

    BBC News Online

Police have lifted a cordon around a house after officers spent 10 days there investigating the disappearance of a missing man.

Huw Williams, 25, from Chester, moved to Nottingham after Christmas to live with a woman he had recently met through a friend.

Mr Williams, who has high-functioning autism, has not been seen since 6 May and disappeared without taking any of his belongings, police said.

His mobile phone was found smashed at his last known residential address in Danethorpe Vale, Sherwood, where detectives have been searching the home and garden area.

Nottinghamshire Police said coverage of his disappearance had led to a spike in calls, but officers have so far been unsuccessful in their attempts to locate Mr Williams.

The force has now closed the scene and lifted the cordon, "as that part of the investigation led to no further evidence".

They are now "pursuing other lines of inquiry" in a bid to trace Mr Williams.

A 34-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm in connection with the case and released on bail, police added.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the force on 101.

  5. Work planned to stop further damage to fire-hit buildingpublished at 11:15 British Summer Time 5 August 2021

    Local Democracy Reporting Service

Parts of a Grade II-listed warehouse in Derby hit by vandalism and fires are at further risk of "imminent collapse", according to a new report.

Major work is being planned to save the Friar Gate Goods Yard building from more damage after an arson attack last year left sections of it beyond repair.

The blaze followed other fires and vandalism incidents at the site in recent years.

The goods yard, which was built in the 1870s, has been derelict for decades.

The owner of the dilapidated city centre site has submitted a planning application to Derby City Council seeking permission to start work on "stabilising" the building to prevent any further damage.

Clowes Developments has said in the long-term it wants to bring the building "back to life and provide new homes, leisure and employment opportunities for the people of Derby".

A new structural appraisal report by Jackson Purdue Lever, submitted as part of the planning documents, says: "Drone imagery reveals a significant portion of the roof structure has been lost during the fire, with several areas of remaining roof appearing to have distorted significantly and deemed at further risk of imminent collapse."

Survey work will take place throughout the stabilisation process to find out what historic material from the building can be saved, retained or reused.

    PA Media

Rolls-Royce returned to profit in the first half of 2021 but warned that the pandemic-hit international aviation industry is taking longer than expected to recover.

The Derby-based engine maker posted bottom-line profits of £393m for the first six months of the year in a marked improvement from mammoth losses of £5.4bn a year ago.

Shares lifted 3% after the result was announced.

Rolls-Royce said large-engine flying hours were still less than half of pre-pandemic levels in 2019, at 43%, but this was up from the 34% seen in the second half of 2020.

The firm is shedding 9,000 jobs worldwide to help it navigate its way through the current difficulties.

"We are confident that, when border restrictions are lifted, the recovery of international travel will accelerate," it said.

    BBC News

A paedophile who tried to flee the UK by hiding in a lorry destined for France has been found guilty of 17 child sex offences, police said.

Mezbaha Uddin, 39, of Outram Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield, was being investigated for a string of offences between September 2018 and July 2020.

Nottinghamshire Police were made aware of Uddin after he interacted with a decoy account set up by an online child activist group.

The group said it alerted authorities after he sent indecent images of himself and arranged to meet, who he thought was, a 14-year-old girl in Mansfield.

He went on the run but was eventually arrested after the National Crime Agency found him in the back of a lorry in Dover.

On Monday, a jury at Canterbury Crown Court found him guilty of 10 counts of attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child, six counts of inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity, and one count of attempting to meet a girl under 16 following grooming.

Det Con Stuart Dolby said: "Child sex offences of any kind are taken incredibly seriously and we have a number of tactics in place to catch offenders out."

He is due to be sentenced on 22 October.

A quarter of the coal-fired power station at Ratcliffe-on-Soar will be shut down next year, according to its owners.

Uniper said it was "accelerating" the phasing out of coal in the UK with its plans to close one of the four 500MW units at the plant at the end of September 2022.

It said the remaining coal-fired units will be closed by the end of September 2024.

In June plans for a £330m waste incinerator at the site were approved.

The proposed incinerator - known as the East Midlands Energy Re-Generation (EMERGE) Centre - will burn almost 500,000 tonnes of waste a year, reduce landfill and generate enough energy to power 90,000 homes.

The government has set a deadline to close all of Britain's unabated coal-fired power stations by October 2025.

The site is also in the running to become one of the world's first nuclear fusion reactors.

    BBC News

A "depraved" teenager who followed women while riding a pushbike and exposed himself to them has been sentenced.

Nottinghamshire Police said during a month of sexual attacks in Lenton, Nottingham, Courtney Wingfield sexually touched women while exposing himself on two occasions.

The 18-year-old's string of assaults between 14 June and 10 July 2020 was brought to an end when he was arrested after his description matched one given to officers by a victim.

The force added Wingfield, of Hope Close in The Meadows, also had indecent images of children on his phone.

Wingfield admitted four counts of indecent exposure, two counts of sexual assault, one count of harassment and three counts of making indecent images of children at an earlier hearing.

He was sentenced to one year and two months in a young offenders institution at Nottingham Crown Court on Monday.

Wingfield was also given a sexual harm prevention order and placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Det Con Mike Jones said: "Wingfield's disturbing actions were utterly depraved and caused an incredible amount of fear for the victims.

"To follow people and know that what you are doing is making them feel frightened but carrying on regardless is truly despicable behaviour.

"It is vile to think that someone would do this."

A man has been handed a reservoir ban after being caught trespassing at Foremark Reservoir with two young children.

Officers were called on Tuesday after the man vaulted a wall into a "highly restricted area" and clambered over jagged rocks with the children in his care.

Police said the trio found themselves near a series of powerful siphons that could have sucked them in if they had entered the water.

The man, from Swadlincote, was handed a 12-month Community Protection Notice Warning which prohibits him from entering any reservoir in South Derbyshire with any other person or child.

In a Facebook post about the incident, the local policing team said they were "horrified" by the man's "reckless" behaviour and "shocked" by his response to their concerns.
