  2. Leicester pop-up cycle lanes to become permanentpublished at 10:57 British Summer Time 4 August 2021

    Reporter, BBC East Midlands Today

Temporary cycle lanes that were installed in Leicester at the start of the pandemic are to be made permanent, the city council says.

Last year the authority introduced 10 miles of cycle lanes to create a safer route for key workers.

    Tim Morton

Tim Morton, from the Leicester Cycling Campaign Group, said: "The advantages of a protected cycle lane whether it is with plastic cones or it is permanently built, is that you are kept away from vehicle traffic.

"It is quite clear where you're supposed to be, and they're supposed to be, so it's safer and that helps with new cyclists, old cyclists, children, and people returning to cycling."

However, the temporary cycle track on Mr Morton's regular Hinckley Road route has been removed as buses have been given priority but other cycle lanes are to be made permanent, like one on Aylestone Road.

Labour city councillor Adam Clarke said: "We do have to strike an incredibly delicate balance between those modes of transport that are environmentally-friendly.

"We need to make sure the bus users are able to get back on to the buses safely and make sure people can take to their bikes as well.

"We are having to amend some of the schemes and in one instance we are having to remove the scheme but we are designing up schemes right across the city."

The council said there were also plans in the long-term to re-introduce a cycle lane on Hinckley Road.

There is also a chance of one or two showers which could be heavy and thundery at times.

Other than these showers, it should feel quite pleasant with temperatures up to 22C (71F).
