    A garage on Exmoor which sells fuel discounted by five pence a litre under the Rural Fuel Rebate Scheme has seen sales increase by around a third since it started six months ago.

    As he filled up at the filling station at Barbrook, taxi driver Gary Wedlake said: "It's made a great difference - living out at Lynmouth in the country, it always feels like you're paying the higher price for fuel, if you're trying to run a small transport business, it does have an impact."

    A man whose heart echogram was cancelled ahead of a planned strike by junior doctors has said he was "a little upset".

    The strike was called off, but hundreds of appointments and some operations in local hospitals postponed.

    People on the edge of Exmoor are furious after plans to put up a mobile phone mast were scrapped.

    Fovernment-appointed contractor Arquiva , externalpulled out just two days after planning permission was granted for the Haddon Hill mast by Exmoor National Park Authority, external, saying it was "unfortunate" it could not be completed on time.

    Terry Brownbill, a spokesman for the Business Exmoor Communications Committee, said people were operating in conditions that would "shame many Third World countries" and the lack of a reliable mobile signal meant businesses were are at a serious competitive disadvantage, while farmers working alone would continue to be in danger.

  8. Scilly rocket mystery cleared uppublished at 17:22

    A chunk of space debris found off the Isles of Scilly was from the first stage of a mission to the International Space Station and not an exploded rocket, as first thought.

    The section of spacecraft was spotted floating between Bryher and Tresco. Coastguards believed it was from the SpaceX Falcon 9 which exploded after take-off in Florida in June.

    SpaceX have now confirmed it was from the earlier CRS-4 mission, which successfully docked with the International Space Station after its launch from Cape Canaveral last September.

    A man accused of murdering a 27-year-old builder on New Year's Day has told a court he was on his way to a fight and took an axe to protect himself.

    Donald Pemberton, 21, denies murdering Tanis Bhandari, 27, in Tamerton Foliot, near Plymouth in Devon. Mr Bhandari was stabbed twice in the attack, Plymouth Crown Court has heard. 

    Mr Pemberton said Ryan Williams, who pleaded guilty to murder last week, went with him to meet a man that Mr Pemberton had been messaging on Facebook.

  12. Junior doctors' relieved at last minute strike cancellationpublished at 16:49

    The last minute cancellation of a strike by junior doctors has been met with relief by the majority of them.

    In the South West, about 60 operations were cancelled as well as hundreds of outpatients appointments.

    Louise Anning, a junior doctor at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, external, said she always hoped it would be possible to avoid taking action, adding that most of her colleagues were relieved and the vote to strike "showed the depth of concern" doctors had about the proposed contract changes.

    Motorists who are under the influence this Christmas may face roadside drugs as well as breathalyser tests.

    A benefit of the junior doctors' strike being called off has been having extra staff to send patients home, a hospital boss has told the BBC.

    The planned industrial action was called off at the last minute, but not before many operations and outpatient appointments were cancelled.

    However Adrian Harris, medical director of the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, said the additional staffing meant the "significant bed pressure" could be relieved, adding: "We have virtually every bed full and this is allowing us to concentrate on getting patients discharged."

    Plans for a new multi-million pound leisure centre in Exeter, including an eight-lane swimming pool and a learner pool for babies and young children, have gone on display.

    The council, external says the state-of-the-art facility will help to encourage people to get fit. "About 70% of the city's population is currently not getting enough exercise," Councillor Pete Edwards added.

    The owner of a garage in north Devon selling fuel at a five pence a litre discount under the government's Rural Fuel Rebate Scheme says it's been an 'amazing' success.

    Exmoor garage owner Lesley Goodman said her sales had increased by around a third, adding: "Our customers have started to come in and fill up their tanks... whereas before they were filling up with a little bit of fuel and then going on to a local supermarket or into a bigger area to buy, so the impact on us has been amazing."
