  2. Yacht firm must 'do anything possible' for redundant staffpublished at 15:15

    A luxury yacht builder planning to cut 350 jobs and other agencies must "do anything possible" to ensure those being made redundant get help to find other jobs, an MP says.

    Plymouth-based Princess Yachts, which has more than 2,000 staff, is starting redundancy consultations as part of a "large-scale restructuring".

    Plymouth Sutton and Devonport MP Oliver Colvile said the company must work with the city council and local Chamber of Commerce.

    He said: "It is very important that there is in place a scheme to make sure that these people who have been selected for redundancy... try and get another job."

  3. Camborne crash: Scene is 'like a ghost town'published at 15:04

    A road where a was knocked over by a police car in Camborne is "very quiet", a local business owners says.

    Police said the Ford Focus was responding to reports of a violent incident in the town with its blue lights flashing when the 12-year-old was hit - investigations are underway and the Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed.

    Julie Bishop owns a launderette close to where the collision happened, she said the whole town was shocked, adding: "It's very very quiet, it's almost like a ghost town, there's not the normal buzz - very quiet."

    The sale of the Plymouth's Civic Centre to developers Urban Splash has been completed, Plymouth City Council says.

    Urban Splash said: "We're delighted to have completed the purchase of the Civic Centre from Plymouth City Council. It's an important listed building and we look forward to reviewing design options over the coming months."

    The 15-storey building, opened by the Queen in 1962, was formerly the city's council offices. It has been sold after plans by the council to demolish the building were quashed after it was granted listed status in 2007.

    Five dogs have been taken to a vets after eating suspected palm oil found on beaches in north Cornwall, a vets' practice says.

    Penmellyn Vets, at St Columb Major, said it had been told the substance was found on beaches at Harlyn, Constantine, Porthcothan and Trevone.

    All the dogs were recovering, the practice said.

    People in Dartmouth want a sign - which says the car park is full when it isn't - changed.

    A sign over the main car park in the town centre has stated there are no free spaces for two weeks.

    The chairman of Dartmouth Business Forum Paul Reach said he wanted it to be removed as soon as possible, as he believed the misleading information was turning visitors away.

  13. Vanish firm probes washed-up pink bottles on Cornwall's beachespublished at 13:00

    The firm behind the Vanish cleaner brand has launched an investigation after thousands of bright pink plastic detergent bottles were washed up on beaches in Cornwall.

    Reckitt Benckiser (RB) is establishing whether its products were connected to the bottles that were found.

    The bottles started arriving at Poldhu Cove on the Lizard on Sunday.

    A spokesman from RB said it was "deeply concerned" to hear about the bottles found on the beaches.

    - The B3240 Notte Street in Plymouth is blocked and slow traffic around the St Andrew Street junction, because of a serious accident.

    - The B3303 Trevenson Street in Camborne is closed and slow traffic in both directions between the Moor Street junction and the Trevenson Lane junction, because of accident investigation work.

    - Very slow traffic is reported on the A39 in both directions in Trevarren between Halloon Roundabout and Trekenning Roundabout in the roadworks area.

    - The M5 is blocked both directions Bridgwater South & Bridgwater North due to an overturned tanker. Diversions are in place but queues are back to Taunton. It's expected the road could be closed until 16:45.

    The budget covering pothole repairs, roads maintenance and school crossing patrols in Devon is to be cut significantly.

    County Council papers reveal a reduction of 3.5% is planned for the coming year, raising concerns for services.

    The council says details of which services will be cut and by how much have not yet been decided - the 2016-2017 proposals will be discussed at a meeting of the ruling cabinet next week. 

  16. Police car collision with girl a 'terrible incident'published at 12:35

    A police car striking a 12-year-old girl in Camborne, seriously injuring her while responding to an emergency, was a "terrible incident", a senior Devon and Cornwall Police officer says.

    The Ford Focus, which had blue lights on, collided with her in Trevenson Street just before 08:00. She is being taken to Bristol Children's Hospital by air ambulance to treat head injuries.

    Supt Ian Drummond-Smith, responsible for policing in Cornwall, said, external: "This is a terrible incident for everyone involved and we deeply apologise that this has happened. All of our thoughts are with the child and her family at this difficult time."

    Two people have been injured after a van overturned at Penryn, Cornwall Fire Service says, external.

    Fire crews made the vehicle safe and paramedics treated two casualties after emergency crews were called to the scene on the B3292 Penryn at about 09:35.

  18. Torbay child protection services rated 'inadequate'published at 12:16

    Child protection services in Torbay have been rated "inadequate" by government inspectors.

    Ofsted said Torbay Council leaders were ineffective and had lost sight of the importance of front line services to protect children. It also found services to vulnerable children were too slow. However, the report also said improvements were starting to be made.

    Torbay Council, along with partners in the police and health service, said they accepted the findings and were working to improve.

    One of Bodmin's biggest employers has just announced that over 400 jobs could be lost at its meat processing factory. Tulip Foods, which has 17 sites throughout the UK, says half the workforce could be affected.

    More on the contamination of several beaches in west Cornwall, after thousands of pink bottles wash ashore.

    And a row has broken out after a cemetery in west Cornwall was closed on Christmas Day. Some people even scaled the walls to put flowers on the graves of loved ones.
