  1. M5 carriageway closure to be lifted by eveningpublished at 11:55

    Lane closures and restrictions on the southbound carriageway of the M5 at Bridgwater are expected to be lifted by 16:45, Devon and Somerset Fire Service has tweeted, external.

    The carriageway was closed after a tanker overturned. The closure has affected traffic coming in and out of Devon.

  2. Police car hits girl during emergency call-outpublished at 11:42

    A police car struck a 12-year-old girl in Camborne, seriously injuring her, while officers were responding to a "violent incident", Devon and Cornwall Police says.

    The Ford Focus, which had blue lights on, collided with her in Trevenson Street just before 08:00. She was initially taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital with head injuries, but was being transferred to Bristol Children's Hospital by air ambulance, officers said.

    The force said, external a full investigation was under way and "traffic officers and forensic experts are at the scene, including senior officers from a neighbouring force".

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission was also informed "as a matter of routine", it added.

  3. Meat factory firm 'hopes to avoid redundancies'published at 11:19

    A meat production company says it hopes to avoid redundancies despite announcing that about 430 positions at its Bodmin plant are to go.

    Tulip Ltd said it was proposing moving its cooked meats operations "from Bodmin to alternative sites within the UK" as a result of "recent supplier reviews with some of our customers".

    Spokesman Nick Purnell said the company had begun a "collective consultation, during which we will have the opportunity to discuss alternative proposals, ways of avoiding redundancies and/or reducing the number of employees affected".

  4. Princess Yachts job cuts 'a blow for Plymouth'published at 10:53

    Plans to cut 350 jobs at a luxury yacht builder are "a big blow" for Plymouth, a union says.

    Plymouth-based Princess Yachts, which has more than 2,000 staff, is starting redundancy consultations as part of a "large-scale restructuring".

    Dave Springbett, from the Unite union, said: "It's terrible news to be honest especially for Plymouth. We struggle with attracting and maintaining good quality manufacturing jobs down here."

  6. Firefighters tackle Brixham blazepublished at 10:17

    Firefighters from across south Devon tackled a large blaze in a storage shed in Brixham last night.

    Crews from Paignton, Torquay and Brixham were called out just after 21:00 - residents in the area were told to close their windows because of asbestos in the shed roof.

    The fire was allowed to burn out - the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.

  7. Girl knocked over by police carpublished at 10:04

    A girl has been seriously injured after being knocked over by a police car in Cornwall.

    A Ford Focus collided with the 12-year-old in Trevenson Street in Camborne just before 08:00, officers confirmed. The girl was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital with head injuries.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said the Independent Police Complaints Commission had been informed as a matter of routine due to the involvement of a police vehicle.

    - The B3303 Trevenson Street in Camborne is closed and there is slow traffic in both directions between the Moor Street junction and the Trevenson Lane junction, because of a police incident. Police are directing traffic  

    - Turnpike Road in Connor Downs is partially blocked and busy but moving near the Arundel Way junction, because of an accident

    - There's an accident on B3292 in Penryn near the Brown's Hill junction

    - There's very slow traffic and the road is just passable on the A39 in Perranarworthal around Norway Inn, because of flooding. Approach with care. Congestion is stretching back to Treliever Roundabout.

    - In Somerset, the southbound M5 is closed at Bridgwater due to an overturned tanker.

    Campaigners in the south west are calling for more funding to tackle dementia in people under 65.

    There are several thousand people in the region below retirement age, including some in their 30s, suffering from the condition.

    Cornwall Councillor Jude Robinson's husband Steve was diagnosed with a rare form of dementia when he was 57.

    She said that, even though she was a councillor, she had struggled to get the right support to help to care for him.

    About 430 positions at a pork production company in Cornwall are "at risk", managers say.

    Tulip Ltd said it was proposing moving cooked meats operations "from Bodmin to alternative sites within the UK" as a result of "recent supplier reviews with some of our customers".

    The company said it was considering expanding its cooked bacon operations at Bodmin, but that it had still begun a consultation with staff to "discuss alternative proposals".

    The company also has plants in Bugle and Redruth.

  14. Community produces own flood warningspublished at 08:37

    A community in Devon is taking action to warn people about potential flooding near Exeter. 

    The Topsham Emergency Group is distributing tide tables to people whose homes they believe are at risk. Topsham is on the Exe Estuary and there were fears homes would be affected by Storm Frank.

    Exeter City Council said there were two flood alleviation schemes planned in the next few years and that it had been working closely with the community to help it become more flooding self-reliant.

  15. Security firm apologises for locked cemetery in west Cornwallpublished at 08:24

    A private contractor has apologised for the distress caused after a cemetery in west Cornwall was closed on Christmas Day

    About 20 mourners arrived at Longstone Cemetery in Carbis Bay to find the gates locked. Some of them ended up climbing in (pictured).

    The graveyard is maintained by Cormac and locked each night by security firm GSD - the security company said staff went to the cemetery to open the gates as soon as they were told about the problem.
