    One of the junior doctors on the picket line in Cornwall has said patient safety is his main concern, not his pay.

    Hospitals in England are facing major disruption as junior doctors have gone on strike in a dispute with the government over a new contract - you can follow the BBC's live coverage here.

    One doctor in Truro Josh Brody has just completed four 12-hour night shifts and before that was doing four 12-hour days.

    He said pay was not the main issue: "It's the changes they're proposing to the hours and taking away the safeguards for the patients... it will inevitably lead to us doing longer and longer hours, which would lead to, I imagine, more mistakes - which is worse for the patients and patient safety overall."

    Junior doctors in Devon and Cornwall are on the picket line today in a 24-hour strike over a dispute with the government over proposed new contracts.

    Thousands of patients across the country have had their treatment postponed - and doctors will be providing emergency cover only during the 24-hour walkout.

    One trainee anaesthetist in Truro Mark Burgess said he felt "massively unvalued" by the government.

    He said: "I feel very valued by the patients and the hospital, but I think the message they've been sending out has definitely undermined the effort that we go to and the work we put in for our patients and they clearly don't value us at all and that's why we're here today." 

  6. Exeter to invest FA Cup windfallpublished at 12:36

    Exeter City chairman Julian Tagg says improving the club's infrastructure is the priority with the money they make from their FA Cup replay at Liverpool.

    Tagg says the club are unlikely to make the £1m predicted by some observers for the two games, as ticket prices for the replay will be at a reduced rate, but Exeter will make at least £500,000 from the two ties, more if the replay is on television.

    "We're trying to develop our grandstand and the training ground. The buildings at our training ground were built in 1974 as temporary buildings, so we've got an awful lot of money that we need to plough back into making our club stronger and stronger," Tagg told BBC Radio Devon.

    Patients across Cornwall and Devon are facing postponed appointments and delays as junior doctors walked out in a 24-hour strike this morning.

    Plans for a 140-acre solar farm - about the size of 80 football pitches - on land in Devon have been turned down.

    Developers Kinetica Energy, external wanted to put the scheme on land near North Tawton, but West Devon Borough Council, external refused permission because it was on such good quality farm land.

  10. Apology from teens after girl glued to Exeter loo seatpublished at 11:49

    Two teenage girls who put glue on a toilet seat at an Exeter fast-food restaurant have apologised to the mother of the four-year-old girl who got stuck.

    Kaya Langmead was left with 'red raw' skin after getting stuck to the seat at McDonald's in Exeter's High Street, her mother Nicole told the BBC.

    Devon and Cornwall Police has now confirmed the two girls have apologised to the family, adding: "Police have been in constant contact with the victim's mother throughout the investigation and she is happy with how this has been dealt with and the outcome. This matter is now closed."

    More than 500 junior doctors in Plymouth are taking part in strike action over a proposed new contract which they say will impact on their pay and could be dangerous to patients.

    Dr Daniel Bunce, who is based at Derriford Hospital, external says his working hours can "vary enormously" from between 40 to 80 a week, often with "minimal breaks".

    "On a busy day you can go for the whole nine-hour shift and maybe just get 10 minutes to quickly nip to the loo and grab a sandwich from the canteen."

  12. Plymouth City Council expected to buy 'eyesore' Quality Inn Hotelpublished at 11:22

    Plymouth City Council has taken action to get rid of an "eyesore" building which is a "blot on our stunning waterfront".

    Contracts have been exchanged between the owners of the Quality Inn hotel and the council which plans to demolish the 10-storey building.

    The hotel, which was built in the late 1960s, closed two years ago. The council said the site would make an "amazing location" for a new hotel.

  17. City council buys derelict Plymouth hotelpublished at 10:05

    Plymouth City Council has revealed it's buying the derelict Quality Hotel site to market it to new developers.

    The site boasts commanding views of the Hoe and Plymouth Sound, but the derelict building has been targeted by vandals and arsonists.

    The council has drawn up a plan of action which involves demolishing the 10-storey building as soon as practicable.

    Council leader Tudor Evans (centre) said: "This site is unique. It has bags of potential with incredible views of the sound and would make an amazing location for a new hotel."
