    Junior doctors on the picket line in Truro have said they're striking to ensure patients' safety.

    Doctors have gone on strike in a dispute with the government over a new contract - you can follow the BBC's Live coverage of the strike here.

    Stephanie Wilson is a Year 2 foundation doctor based in St Austell, she said: "I think the changes they are proposing are unsafe for patients, unsafe for us... this is a worrying sign, if they can change it now, I'm very worried they're going to change more afterwards."

  2. Fire crews tackle Tavistock pool house blazepublished at 09:39

    Six fire crews have been tackling a blaze in an outbuilding near Tavistock, external involving acetylene cylinders. 

    A 200m safety cordon was set up around the wooden building on a farm in Whitchurch, containing a swimming pool. 

    Firefighters from Tavistock, Yelverton, Princetown and Crownhill fought the fire, a water bowser from Plympton and a command support unit from Totnes were also deployed.

  5. Devon's fire crews tackle bedroom firepublished at 09:11

    Firefighters were called out last night to deal with a blaze in a three-storey house, external in Torquay. 

    Crews were called to the fire in a second floor bedroom in the property in Edinburgh Villas, Upton just after midnight - the fire was quickly extinguished.

    An inspection will be carried out this morning and there'll be an investigation into the cause in daylight hours. No-one was hurt.

    Thousands of NHS patients in England are facing a day of disruption as junior doctors begin a 24-hour strike.

    The action, during which they'll provide only emergency care, is the result of a row with the government over new contracts.

    The Devon MP and former GP Sarah Wollaston said she had a "a great deal of sympathy" for junior doctors, but added: "I think that what has been achieved so far is there has been significant compromise on some of this, particularly on the issue of whether we would see a slide back into the dangerously long hours that my generation of doctors used to work."

  7. British Isles turtle strandings rise in stormspublished at 08:50

    Winter storms have led to a spike in the number of turtles washed up in the British Isles.

    Sixteen warm-water turtles were found on shorelines in December - the highest number for that month since 2008, according to Marine Environmental Monitoring and Cork Nature Network.

    This young barnacle-encrusted loggerhead turtle was found stranded at Gwithian beach in Cornwall and is being cared for at the Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay.

    Some, such as endangered Kemp's Ridley turtles, external, come from as far away as the Gulf of Mexico - experts believe storms Desmond, Eva and Frank have led to the increase.

  9. Engineer dies in Falmouth ship lift crushpublished at 08:24

    Investigations are underway after an engineer was crushed to death while servicing a lift on a car ferry at Falmouth docks in Cornwall.

    Police said father-of-two Steve Summerside from Sunderland died after getting trapped between the lift and the shaft on the MV Ulysses.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said it was investigating the death of the 45-year-old alongside the Health and Safety Executive.

    Junior doctors across Devon and Cornwall have walked out on strike this morning over a proposed new contract which they say will impact on their pay and be dangerous to patients.

    The Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt says he's disappointed that the British Medical Association's members have chosen to take industrial action and that his top priority is patient safety and making sure the NHS delivers high quality care, seven days a week.

    One Plymouth doctor Daniel Bunce told me: "No doctor really wants to strike, we all want to be in there working, doing the best for our patients, but ultimately if this contract was imposed, it would lead to much more risky patient care."
