The Quality Hotel has been described as an eyesore on Plymouth's seafront for years, blighted by vandalism and arson attacks.
Now city council plans to sort it out are moving forward - demolition contractors Gilpin have been appointed and have started work on knocking down the building.
Hoardings will be the first change that people will see as the contractors begin the task of securing the site.

Coastguards are warning yachtsmen to take proper care after it was revealed two American yachtsmen towed in by the St Ives lifeboat yesterday, have been rescued seven times since their voyage began.
The pair set off from Norway last July and have run aground, suffered a damaged propellor shaft, failed batteries and further mechanical problems.
The Maritime & Coastguard Agency said: "The crew were right to call us when they got into trouble... However, it is the responsibility of the crew to undertake the necessary repairs to safely prepare them for the next stage of their journey."

Work is underway to fix the broken chain that has reduced the Torpoint ferry to a two-ferry service since last week, causing delays to travellers.
The Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee Facebook page, external reads: "First part of the job is to pull on board a good few tons of chain until we get to the damaged link. Slow and laborious process utilising a combination of ferry power, tractor power and muscle power in stages to bring it in safely without twisting or causing further problems."

Two care home managers have been found not guilty of neglecting residents by failing to act on allegations of abuse.
Truro Crown Court heard there was no evidence that Robert Rogers, 44, and Anna Dalziel, 36, deliberately chose not to tell authorities about the claims at the Ponsandane home in Penzance.
A carer, Emma Morse was cleared of one charge of abusing elderly residents, but the judge discharged the jury from returning verdicts on five other abuse charges she faced, after what he called a "serious complication". All three defendants had denied the charges.

The Duchy of Cornwall is fighting a court ruling that would force it to open up to increased public scrutiny.
The Prince of Wales derives his income from the Duchy of Cornwall as heir to the throne - the estate comprising of 53,628 hectares of land in 23 counties.
Lawyers for the Duchy are appealing against a 2011 decision that it is a 'public authority' and must hand over environmental data from a controversial oyster farm it owns at Port Navas in Cornwall.

A lorry crashed into a service station near Bodmin this afternoon, external. Contrary to earlier reports, the station, rather than the lorry, lost its roof in the collision.

A man who drowned after becoming trapped in Sutton Harbour, external told rescuers he was "so cold" and used the word "dad" before disappearing under the water, an inquest has heard.

Exeter University students have called for better checks on exams after disruption to exams on biology, politics and international relations.
Nicola Foster, a first-year biosciences student, said invigilators warned students about incorrect answers on multiple choice questions half way through her exam.
The university said problems were dealt with "swiftly and responsibly to minimise the impact on students".
Cornwall Council has confirmed a member of staff at Foxhole Primary School has resigned after a school contractor was arrested by the police.
The matter has been referred by the school near St Austell to the relevant statutory agencies "in order to ensure the safety and well-being of children".
In a statement, the school said: "As this matter is currently being investigated by the police we are unable to make any further comments at this time."
