  1. Tony Beard: Radio Devon boss pays tributepublished at 15:29

    BBC Radio Devon's managing editor, Mark Grinnell, has paid tribute to presenter Tony Beard - the "Wag From Widecombe" - who died over the weekend at the age of 79.

    He said: "Tony has been with BBC Radio Devon for over 30 years. 

    "Tony's listeners saw him as a friend and an integral part of their anniversaries and celebrations during his ever-popular Sunday request show.

    "Friends and colleagues at BBC Radio Devon will miss him, as will his many devoted listeners."

  2. MPs 'hopeful' of rail improvemments cashpublished at 15:20

    MPs from Devon and Cornwall have met with the chancellor to urge the government to commit money for rail improvements in the South West.

    It follows news that there's currently no more money available for rail upgrades until 2019, or even cash to fund a report into better rail links for the region.

    North Cornwall Conservative Scott Mann said the MPs put their points "forcefully" to George Osborne and he was "hopeful" there would be money for the crucial studies soon.

    Cornish Pirates boss Ian Davies felt his side should have taken a bonus point from their win over Ealing.

    Toby May, Rob Elloway and Kyle Moyle all scored tries for the Pirates as they beat the London-based side 30-15 to go sixth in the Championship.

    "I think we could have got a bonus point, but there were passages where we were certainly second-best," Davies told BBC Radio Cornwall.

    A 65-year-old man has died in a collision on the A390 in Cornwall, police say, external

    Emergency services were called to the scene at Probus after a collision involving Toyota RAV4 4x4 and a Land Rover Defender at about 11:00. The Toyota driver, from Truro, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

    Officers said the road was "expected to remain shut for some time" while they examined the scene. Drivers have been advised to avoid the area.

  6. People 'missing out on superfast broadband'published at 14:25

    A Cornwall MP says many of his constituents are missing out on the much-vaunted roll out of superfast broadband in the county.

    St Austell and Newquay Conservative Steve Double said: "The money that's been put into Cornwall is to provide superfast connections for 95% of people. It's quite clear that, whatever BT figures might try and say, 95% of my constituents have not got that connection."

    Superfast Cornwall said it had built a fibre network, meaning nearly 90% of the county could online with speeds of over 24 megabits per second. 

  7. Dockyard nuclear safety 'improves'published at 14:12

    Inspectors say they are satisfied that safety procedures at Devonport Dockyard have been tightened up after a worker received a dose of radiation. 

    The Office for Nuclear Regulation issued an improvement notice following the incident in December 2014. It covered five points including planning, risk assessment and pre-work briefings. 

    It said management at Devonport had implemented its recommendations.

  8. Unsporting Wycombe boss annoys Adamspublished at 13:59

    Plymouth Argyle manager Derek Adams has criticised Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth for refusing to shake hands at the end of their ill-tempered League Two game at Home Park.

    Wycombe beat the Pilgrims 1-0 and there was a scuffle between players for both sides after the final whistle.

    "I'm disappointed in Gareth Ainsworth not to shake hands after the game," Adams told BBC Radio Devon. "You should always shake hands with your opponents, but he chose not to."

    - In Devon, one lane of the A38 Parkway in Plymouth, Exeter-bound at the Marsh Mills roundabout, is blocked due to broken down vehicle 

    - In Paignton, on Ramshill Road, near Marldon Road, there are reports an accident

  10. Man seriously hurt in A390 collisionpublished at 13:32

    A man has been seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision on the A390 near Truro, police say.

    Emergency services were called to the scene at Probus after a "serious collision" between two vehicles, which was reported at about 11:00.

    One man was reported as trapped in his vehicle. The road has been closed and diversion are in place through Probus.

  12. Injured seal numbers soar at Cornwall sanctuarypublished at 13:11

    A seal sanctuary in Cornwall has seen a huge rise in the number of injured pups in the wake of Storm Gertrude.

    The Cornish Seal Sanctuary in Gweek usually rescues between 50 and 60 pups over the whole winter but it has already rescued 52.

    Staff expect the influx to continue to the end of March, with Storm Henry preparing to sweep in. The stormy conditions are also preventing staff from releasing seals back into the wild.

  13. Arrests after men 'impersonate police'published at 12:57

    Three men have been arrested after an off-duty officer was pulled over during what is thought to be an attempt to steal his car, police say, external.

    The officer was flashed to pull over in Plymouth at about 04:10 on Sunday. Two men claiming to be police alleged the real officer was drink-driving and asked him to get out of his car and leave the keys in the ignition.

    The pair drove off when he announced he was an actual officer. Three Plymouth men - aged 21, 23, 37 -  were later arrested in connection with the incident.

  14. Acid attack victim Andreas Christopheros tells of 'very dark pain'published at 12:46

    A man who had sulphuric acid thrown over him by a stranger who knocked on his front door was left in "very dark pain", he has told the BBC.

    Andreas Christopheros, 29, was left blind in one eye after the attack in December 2014. 

    David Phillips, 49, from Hastings, Sussex, was jailed for life last October for assaulting him at his home in Truro, Cornwall. Mr Christopheros was with his wife and young son at home when he was attacked.  

  15. Two-car accident closes A390published at 12:23 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2016

    The A390 at Probus has been closed due to a serious two-car accident. 

    Emergency services, including the air ambulance, are at the scene and diversions are in place.

    Devon and Cornwall Police tweeted, external that the road was closed and "likely to remain so for some time".

    Listeners and community members have paid tribute to Tony Beard on the BBC Radio Devon Facebook page, external after his death over the weekend at the age of 79

    The "Wag From Widecombe" presented his Sunday request show for more than 30 years. It became the most successful programme on BBC Radio Devon. 

    Station bosses said he was "as much a part of the radio station as he was of the county, a keen custodian of Devon folklore and culture".
