    Friday will be a dry day for most, with the best of the sunshine in the west. It'll be cloudier in the east, with the risk of some rain later. But it will feel warm in the summer sun. Maximum temperature: 18C (64F).

    A 16-year-old sailor who stayed at his post during the Battle of Jutland is still inspiring sailors training in Cornwall, a naval base commander says.

    Jack Cornwell was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry and his portrait still hangs in the chapel of HMS Raleigh in Torpoint, where a wreath has been has been laid to commemorate him.

    Base commander Capt Rob Belfield said: "Every Friday afternoon we have a passing out parade and I take the visiting officer into the chapel and we stand underneath the portrait. I just tell the story. I think it's a really good focus in how important sailors are. We're not about famous admirals or captains here at Raleigh, we're about getting sailors in the right mindset to protect the nation's interests in the fleet."

    A St Austell health centre is offering space and equipment for ophthalmologists as part of efforts to reduce a backlog of 2,000 eye appointments in Cornwall.

    It's causing a a big problem throughout the South West, with demand rising but a shortage of space and ophthalmologists. We know that at least two people have completely lost their sight in recent years while waiting for appointments.

    Consultant ophthalmologist Ashish Patwardhan (pictured) said of the work in St Austell: "What this service does is provide care close to home ... But, more importantly, it's an extra facility which does not put strain on Treliske [Royal Cornwall Hospital] resources."

    Coastguards are warning there has been a rise in the number of beach rescues of people being trapped in sand, after digging deep holes which collapse.

    In 2005, three-year-old Abbie Livingstone-Nurse died when a 5ft hole in the sand collapsed on top of her on Upton Towans Beach near Hayle. 

    Andy Cattrell from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said sand could be deceptively heavy: "If you imagine a dustbin full of sand, it doesn't look very much, but you wouldn't be able to shift it. If you put that on you, or on a child, it's going to get you in trouble straight away. It restricts your breathing, and, the more you move, the worse it gets."

    A Royal Navy cadet, who has accused a fellow student of raping her twice, has told a court martial she carried out internet searches for pharmacies selling the morning-after pill and for the legal definition of rape.

    She also went to her alleged attacker's room after the incident to return cufflinks and threatened to wreck his career if he told anyone because she was "scared others will find out", the court martial in Portsmouth was told. She said: "I have admitted that happened, I am not particularly proud of that, I was just distressed, I didn't know how to deal with these things."

    Sub Lt Samuel Mitchell, 27, is accused of the attack at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Devon last year when the alleged victim was "too drunk to consent". He denies two counts of rape. The hearing continues.

    People in Barnstaple are being asked to keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour after two fires near woodlands.

    North Devon Council said dead vegetation was set alight near timber steps on the northern boundary of Yeo Valley Woodland last month, and a £600 cob bench was damaged by another fire some days later the first blaze.

    Councillor Brian Moores said the "mindless vandalism" was "particularly sad considering how much work the local community has put in to the woodland". He said: "Not only does fire cause damage it is potentially very dangerous so this is a really serious matter."

    A stump speech by former Labour Home Secretary Alan Johnson MP in Camborne has been heckled by a man protesting about EU fishing quotas.

    Fisherman Dave Hicks held a Vote Leave placard and approached the Remain campaigners, saying: "We want our fishing grounds back", adding Britain's fishing industry had been "destroyed by Brussels". He was asked to "go away" during a confrontation with a Labour activist. 

    Remain campaigners say staying in the EU gives better access to the European market, rights to fish in the waters of other member states, and collective bargaining power to negotiate access rights in other waters.

    Police are hunting for a suspected road rage attacker in a van who assaulted a driver on the Tamar Bridge between Plymouth and Saltash.

    The assault, at about 14:00 on Tuesday 26 April, occurred after a white Peugeot van followed a black VW Golf on to the westbound carriageway of the bridge. The van swerved in front of the Golf before stopping quickly, and the driver got out and assaulted the car driver - a man in his 30s. During the assault, traffic backed up on the bridge.

    Officers appealed for witnesses and have released CCTV video, external of the van swerving in front of the car.

    Torquay United midfielder Aman Verma has agreed terms on a new contract with the National League side.

    The 29-year-old, who can also play right-back, scored one goal in 23 appearances after joining the Devon club from Kidderminster in November.

    "He's an athlete that can play anywhere and I'm delighted to have him back on board," said manager Kevin Nicholson. "Aman was a valuable asset for us last season and is a fantastic guy to have on and off the pitch."

    A Royal Navy cadet who has accused a fellow student of raping her twice has told a court martial she passed him a tub of moisturiser which he rubbed into her back.

    The complainant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told the court martial in Portsmouth this was "one of the things I have struggled with, I became compliant, I cannot explain that".

    The government is being warned it could be harming public health by cutting funding for local authorities to clean up brownfield sites.

    In a report out today, the Environmental Audit Committee said untreated soil contamination could enter the water source. It claimed the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs had withdrawn funding for local authorities to clean up such contamination.

    Sand Hill Park in Gunnislake is one area that applied and was rejected for funding. Martin Hewitt, who lives there, said: "The embankment looks nice but it’s totally contaminated. We've been told that we can’t go up there and we don’t. We've been told that, as long as we don't touch anything, and we don’t dig it up, and we wear gloves if we’re near it, that things aren’t too bad."
