    The largest skate park in the South West has had a £70,000 world class refit.

    Mount Hawke, near Truro, is now complete and open to the public after work paid for by community funding.

    The skate park is a not-for-profit charity.

    The A30 Exeter-bound at Cheriton Bishop is partially blocked after a caravan overturned between Whiddon Down and the Woodleigh junction. 

    The incident is affecting traffic travelling between Okehampton and Exeter. 

    Police are directing traffic and drivers are being warned to expect long delays.

    A Royal Navy officer cadet has admitted climbing back into bed with a man being court martialled she alleges raped her while she was "too drunk to consent". 

    Samuel Mitchell, 27, now a sub lieutenant, is accused of going into the room of the cadet at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, following a dinner dance in May 2014. He denies two counts of rape.

    Under cross-examination, she was asked why she "got dressed into your pyjamas and you got back into bed with a man who has raped you twice". She replied: "All I can say is I wanted to fall asleep, I can't explain more than that, I think I couldn't process, I just wanted to fall asleep, that's all I can remember." The hearing, in Portsmouth, continues.

    A builder has apologised for his behaviour after kicking a Royal Marine in the head and then posting a picture of a bottle of champagne on Facebook after his suspended sentence.

    Ben Scott, 31, from Redruth was recalled to Truro Crown Court yesterday and jailed by Judge Christopher Harvey Clark, who described his social media post as a "stupid and gloating comment".

    Scott then took to Facebook once again to say he was "ashamed" of the way he handled that night last year in a car park in Camborne, adding he was "sorry for the discomfort I have caused him" and "my actions were not justified in any way".

    The 26-year-old scored seven goals in 14 appearances for the Pilgrims during a loan spell towards the end of the season.

    Photographer Adrian Langdon, external, who managed to capture these fantastic shots, said: "I finally caught up with the elusive Pelican very early this morning at the 3rd attempt. I left home just after 04:30 and drove down to Penzance in the fog but luckily was greeted by a beautiful day down in Mounts Bay. The bird had roosted at Drift and put on a bit of a show for me!"

    High street opticians should be allowed to offer more treatments to tackle a huge backlog for hospital eye appointments because they are "under-utilised", an optometrists' group says.

    Pressure on appointments in the South West is so high that, in recent years, some people have completely lost their sight while waiting to be given appointments. 

    Charles Bill, vice chairman of the Devon Local Optical Committee, external - which represents optometrists - said: "As the NHS is unable to deal with these patients in a timely fashion, a new way of looking way after these long-term conditions is required. The next highly qualified people in eyes are optometrists. It's something that has just been under-utilised."

    The government should tighten up boating laws after two speedboat accidents in the South West within the last three years resulted in three deaths and two people being injured, a lawyer representing a victim's family says.

    Yesterday, an inquest concluded 14-year-old Emily Gardner (pictured) drowned last year after being trapped under a boat off Brixham (pictured). Her parents want laws to make it compulsory for powerboat drivers to have licences, and for all passengers to wear properly-fitting buoyancy aids.

    The Gardners' lawyer, Richard Langton, said he hoped that their case, and the deaths of father and daughter Nick and Emily Milligan in Padstow in 2013 would make "the authorities would sit up and listen".

    The police have issued an appeal for information, external after two women were racially abused in Exeter.

    The women were left shaken and distressed by the incident on Saturday, officers said.

    Sergeant Colin Harper, from Exeter Neighbourhood Team, said: "Police will not tolerate such appalling incidents of hate crime in Devon and Cornwall and we are appealing to anyone who can help us locate this man."

    A new horse event aimed at putting Dartmoor on the world map would give animals and riders to find out what they're capable of, Doc Martin and Men Behaving Badly actor Martin Clunes says.

    The derby, being planned for September, is inspired by the world's longest and toughest horse race in Mongolia and African riding safaris.

    Clunes, who is also president of the British Horse Society, said: "You find things out about your horse, about your riding, and you find out what your horse is capable of. You might think 'little Fudge couldn’t do that because he’s never done it before'. You’ve only got to ask them – they’re such tryers."

  18. Navy base remembers 'Boy Cornwell'published at 11:06 British Summer Time 2 June 2016

    The sacrifice made by a 16-year-old sailor at the Battle of Jutland will be remembered today at Cornwall's HMS Raleigh on the 100th anniversary of his death.

    Jack Cornwell, also known as Boy Cornwell - who trained in Plymouth - was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry on HMS Chester. Mortally wounded, he remained at his gun while shipmates lay around him dead or injured. He died two days later.

    The battle, the largest of sea engagement of World War One, saw 6,094 British and 2,551 German personnel lose their lives. Cornwell's grave in London was given Grade II listed status last week.
