Nineteen school crossing patrols in Cornwall will be axed after a review by Cornwall Council.

The study was based on the number of vehicles passing the crossing point, combined with the number of children crossing, during the busiest 30-minute period in the morning and afternoon.

Those that didn't meet the criteria will lose their patrol officers at the end of the summer term.

A pilot scheme in Port Isaac to ensure holiday let owners pay privately for their rubbish collections begin on 4 July, a senior councillor says.

National legislation means any premises used to make money should use a private waste collector and not put out black bags for council collections. The Cornwall Council pilot scheme will allow bosses to decide how best to approach the issue, as the situation could be costing the tax payer.

Joyce Duffin, council environment portfolio holder, said the authority had written to holiday let owners to give them time to employ a commercial waste collector. She added that legislation around litter and fly-tipping was available if it needed to take action, but the council was hoping it would not come to that.

Tens of thousands of pounds paid out by a cleaning product company in clear-up costs after hundreds of pink bottles washed up on Cornish beaches - including at Gunwalloe, Poldhu and the Lizard - in January did not take into account how much it could have cost to have all the work done, a National Trust ranger has said.

    Cornwall map

It's thought the bottles came from a container that fell off the deck of a ship. Reckitt Benckiser paid the Maritime and Coastguard Agency about £38,000 in costs and Cornwall Council about £5,500. The National Trust's costs were also met, and it received a contribution to conservation work.

However, Justin Whitehouse, lead ranger for the trust on the Lizard, said: "So much of the clean-up operation was done by volunteers - it was members of the local community. It wasn't staff costs, it was actually local people coming down and mucking in. That wasn't factored in. That's what we're good at: mobilising volunteers."

  14. Transport infrastructure plan around Exeter 'wholly inadequate'published at 12:23 British Summer Time 7 June 2016

    BBC Radio Devon

Current plans for transport infrastructure in the Exeter area are "wholly inadequate", campaigners say.

The Campaign for West Exeter Smarter Transport is sending an open letter to Devon County, Teignbridge District and Exeter City councils about its concerns. It follows the county council withdrawing an application for a park and ride near the village of Ide after residents voted four-to-one against plans for a 500-space scheme in a referendum.

Lynn Wetenhall, from the campaign, said: "The plans are wholly inadequate, not only for now, but for the massive growth that's going on in Exeter. We have to do something radical. We can't just keep rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic and doing what's been done for the past 20 years because we will reach gridlock."

  15. Work needed over hospital's emergency care 'so patients get care they need'published at 12:15 British Summer Time 7 June 2016

    BBC Spotlight

Work is needed to improve emergency care at Torbay Hospital so patients get what they need, an inspector says.

    Emergency Dept sign

The emergency department has been condemned as "inadequate", with the Care Quality Commission finding delays which place patients at risk of harm. However, the Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust was rated overall as "requiring improvement", with some areas highlighted for high praise.

Mary Cridge, from the CQC said: "They need to sort out patients in A&E getting assessed within 15 mins of arrival. They need to make good decisions that put patients in the right place. They need to sort out the crowding in the hospital, so patients can get on to the right ward for the care they need."
