    The Purple Angel Ponies project - the first of its kind in the UK - involves exercising miniature horses in the countryside near Redruth.

  2. Calls for councils to review Exeter transport goalspublished at 11:34 British Summer Time 7 June 2016

    An open letter is being sent to three Devon councils asking for an urgent, full and open review of transport goals for Exeter.

    The Campaign for West Exeter Smarter Transport said the whole traffic strategy for the city needed immediate attention. It follows Devon County Council withdrawing an application for a park and ride near the village of Ide after residents voted four-to-one against plans for a 500-space scheme in a referendum. 

    It has contacted the county council, Teignbridge District Council and Exeter City Council.

  3. HMS Ocean in Nato exercise in Baltic Seapublished at 11:22

    The Royal Navy's HMS Ocean is taking part in one of the largest multinational Nato exercises ever staged in the Baltic Sea.

    The Devonport-based helicopter carrier is part of Exercise Baltops, which tests the 16 Allied and partner maritime nations taking part. 

    The Navy said the annual event aimed to assure nations of Nato's commitment to the security and stability of the Baltic Sea region.

  4. 'Bad batch' heroin warning after men found unconscious in toiletspublished at 11:09 British Summer Time 7 June 2016

    A so-called "bad batch" of heroin may be doing the rounds in Cornwall, police say after two men were found unconscious in public toilets in Newquay.

    Officers were called to toilets on East Street at about 14:30 on Monday and found the men had "difficulty in breathing and in a life-threatening state". Paramedics resuscitated them and treated them for a suspected heroin overdose. 

    Police said they had been told the men may have taken a "stronger batch" of the drug, but also said they could not rule out a "bad batch". They have warned drug users to be aware of the incident.

    The fear of crossing the road is posing a serious threat to bat populations across Europe, scientists have found.

    Researchers investigated more than 1,000 bat deaths caused by collisions with cars and found evidence the animals were avoiding roads. Reluctance to cross roads was believed to be disrupting their ability to reach feeding and roosting areas.

    Dr Fiona Mathews, from the University of Exeter, said: "Our research has now shown that road fatalities are also an important issue, particularly when rarer species such as barbastelle and horseshoe bats are affected."

    There's growing concern in Torbay at the large number of roads where parking is being banned for the duration of the Torbay Airshow, external this weekend.

    Hundreds of yellow no parking signs have gone up around the Bay in a wide variety of places, including the main coast road and residential streets. In total, more than 70 roads are affected, with some roads being closed altogether, with only residents allowed in. 

    Patricia Toft, who lives in one street where parking is being banned, said: "This is very extensive, it's massive, it goes along the seafront and everywhere. Why do they need to block off so many roads? What are the public going to feel like when they get here and they can't park anywhere?"

    The boss of a disgraced gynaecologist, who worked at the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, failed to get a report about complaints relating to the gynaecologist's work and also failed to obtain a report about legal actions, a tribunal has heard.

    More than 200 women treated by Rob Jones have joined a group taking legal action against the hospital's managing trust. Mr Jones was suspended and later retired and the trust has apologised unreservedly to patients. 

    A hearing of the Medical Practitioners Tribunal in Manchester heard Mr Jones' boss, Dr Paul Upton (pictured), did not investigate Mr Jones properly. He is further accused of failing to arrange meetings with colleagues who had raised concerns about Mr Jones and also of failing to restrict him from clinical practice. The hearing continues.

  12. Pregnant woman rescued from four-vehicle car crashpublished at 09:35 British Summer Time 7 June 2016

    A pregnant woman's been rescued from her car after a four-vehicle crash in Exeter. 

    Two fire crews went to the scene in Pinhoe Road yesterday evening.

    They used hydraulic rescue equipment to release the woman from her car. Her condition is unknown.

    Services provided by Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust have overall been rated as "requiring improvement" following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission. 

    Inspectors found staff in Torbay Hospital's emergency department were "positive and professional under pressure", but there were not always enough senior doctors or nurses on duty.

    The CQC said that in the emergency department, patients did not always receive an initial assessment within 15 minutes. The numbers of nurses on medical wards regularly fell below the level that the trust felt that they needed and in outpatients, there were not enough doctors to allow the trust to address its "significant backlog of follow up appointments".

    Efforts to make sure holiday let owners in Cornwall pay privately for their rubbish collections are getting under way in Port Isaac.

    National legislation means any premises used to make money should use a private waste collector and not put out black bags for council collections. 

    However, Cornwall Council is concerned not everyone is following the rules, and a pilot scheme is starting in the village to see how best to approach the issue.
