A mechanical puppet making a 130-mile journey across Devon and Cornwall will be accompanied by theatrical shows with music and storytelling to celebrate local mining heritage, those behind the project say.

It will be on show at 20 locations as part of a two-week journey, which finishes at Geevor Tin Mine on 6 August. It will be in Kit Hill later.

Work on a £1.5m flood alleviation scheme in Salcombe has finished in time for the summer holidays, South West Water says, external.
The company and its partners said they had been upgrading the sewerage network in the resort since November 2015 and had laid more than 2,000m of new surface water drains during eight months of work.
Project manager Andy Young said: "We have successfully removed large volumes of surface water from the foul sewerage network, which will alleviate flooding to roads and properties during heavy rain. Surface water from the Fore Street area now discharges to the sea from a new surface water outfall at Whitestrand Quay, which will ease the pressure on the network."

The owner of Dartmoor Zoo says he still believes they'll catch a lynx which escaped three weeks ago.
Last night trackers went out again with thermal imaging cameras.
The zoo is also playing the call of its parents every evening and lining traps with bedding used by an ocelot - another breed of cat, which it should be attracted to. The animal escaped from its enclosure just hours after arriving at the zoo from Kent.

A school for deaf children in Devon says it is continuing "to cooperate fully" with an ongoing investigation by the local council and police.
The investigation was started after a whistleblower made claims of drinking by staff of the Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education on residential trips, allowing children and young people to misbehave and engage in sexual activity. There were also allegations students were manhandled by staff, the BBC has learnt.
The school - a mixed, residential facility with 76 students aged between four and 24 - said it "cannot and should not comment until this [investigation] is complete and the facts have been properly established".
But it added: "We care deeply about the welfare of our students, and will act quickly if it is found that any improvements need to be made at the academy."

A decision by the International Olympic Committee to not give Russia a blanket ban from the Rio Olympics following the country's doping scandal is a "disappointing decision", Devon-born Olympian Jo Pavey says.

Police are appealing for witnesses after an assault on a taxi driver, external on Honicknowle Lane, Plymouth.
A Taxi First blue Ford Mondeo estate picked up four teenagers near the Carpe Diem pub, North Hill, at about 04:50 on Sunday.
When they arrived at the lane the four teenagers left the taxi without paying. The driver followed one of the group who, along with another person, assaulted the taxi driver, police said.
The victim, a 46-year-old man, sustained head and facial injuries and was treated in hospital.
A single woodland nut, chewed by a dormouse, had a central part to play in a High Court dispute, external over a controversial housing development in South Devon.

St Austell and Newquay MP Steve Double has joined others urging the government's rapid approval to build a new runway at London's Heathrow Airport.
He and an influential group of Cornish business chiefs and politicians have written to new Transport Secretary Chris Grayling, saying "that following the vote to leave the EU, the economic case for a new runway has never been stronger" in order to "do more trade with the rest of the globe".
Heathrow is competing with Gatwick for government permission to expand increasing capacity in the south east. A decision has been delayed until "at least October".

"He's a guy who we haven't just brought in to warm the bench, this is a guy who's going to come in and bring the best out of the other two strikers at the club and make sure he's pushing for a start," Torquay boss Kevin Nicholson told BBC Sport.
