  3. The Man Engine: 'Honouring the achievements of miners'published at 17:46 British Summer Time 25 July 2016

    A mechanical puppet making a 130-mile journey across Devon and Cornwall will be accompanied by theatrical shows with music and storytelling to celebrate local mining heritage, those behind the project say.

    The 40-tonne, 10m tall Man Engine, external, unveiled in Tavistock earlier, marks the 10th anniversary of Cornish Mining World Heritage status being granted by Unesco. It will be on show at 20 locations as part of a two-week journey, which finishes at Geevor Tin Mine on 6 August. It will be in Kit Hill later.

    Artistic director Will Coleman said: "We have all worked together to drive a colossal scale and excitement into him, honouring the achievements, the harshness, the beauty and the significance that the work, energy and brainpower that these [mining] people brought to our entire world."  

  4. Salcombe flood alleviation work finishes in time for summer holidayspublished at 17:41 British Summer Time 25 July 2016

    Work on a £1.5m flood alleviation scheme in Salcombe has finished in time for the summer holidays, South West Water says, external.

    The company and its partners said they had been upgrading the sewerage network in the resort since November 2015 and had laid more than 2,000m of new surface water drains during eight months of work.

    Project manager Andy Young said: "We have successfully removed large volumes of surface water from the foul sewerage network, which will alleviate flooding to roads and properties during heavy rain. Surface water from the Fore Street area now discharges to the sea from a new surface water outfall at Whitestrand Quay, which will ease the pressure on the network."

    The owner of Dartmoor Zoo says he still believes they'll catch a lynx which escaped three weeks ago. 

    Last night trackers went out again with thermal imaging cameras. 

    The zoo is also playing the call of its parents every evening and lining traps with bedding used by an ocelot - another breed of cat, which it should be attracted to. The animal escaped from its enclosure just hours after arriving at the zoo from Kent.

    A school for deaf children in Devon says it is continuing "to cooperate fully" with an ongoing investigation by the local council and police.

    The investigation was started after a whistleblower made claims of drinking by staff of the Exeter Royal Academy for Deaf Education on residential trips, allowing children and young people to misbehave and engage in sexual activity. There were also allegations students were manhandled by staff, the BBC has learnt.

    The school - a mixed, residential facility with 76 students aged between four and 24 - said it "cannot and should not comment until this [investigation] is complete and the facts have been properly established".

    But it added: "We care deeply about the welfare of our students, and will act quickly if it is found that any improvements need to be made at the academy."

    The first clash of the season between Exeter City and Plymouth Argyle will be a 13:00 kick off after police advice.

    The League Two game on Saturday 17 September has been brought forward from its normal kick-off time of 15:00.

    It will be the 50th meeting of the two clubs at St James Park.

    A Devon MP has become ministerial aide in Prime Minister Theresa May's new government.

    North Devon Conservative Peter Heaton-Jones MP - who became an MP in the 2015 General Election - said he had been appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to work at the Department for Work & Pensions, to assist ministers duties and provide "a link between the government and backbench MPs".

    He said: "I feel privileged to have been asked to take on this job after a relatively short period as an MP, and look forward to working as part of the new government team."

  11. Decision to not ban Russia from Olympics 'disappointing'published at 16:14

    A decision by the International Olympic Committee to not give Russia a blanket ban from the Rio Olympics following the country's doping scandal is a "disappointing decision", Devon-born Olympian Jo Pavey says.

    The committee said it would leave it up to individual sports' governing bodies to decide if Russian competitors were clean and should be allowed to take part.

    On Twitter, external, Pavey (pictured) said the decision "does not send out a strong message that doping will not be tolerated".

    The European gold medallist and soon-to-be five time British Olympic distance runner was beaten at the 2006 European Championships by a Russian athlete who was later banned for doping.

    The Brixham Express catamaran was due to begin operating in December 2014 but was delayed because of safety certificate issues, its owners said. 

    It finally came into its new home port last month.

    Up until now, stand-in ferries ran for the first five months and were subsidised with a government grant of £544,000, equivalent to £170 per passenger.

    Police are appealing for witnesses after an assault on a taxi driver, external on Honicknowle Lane, Plymouth.

    A Taxi First blue Ford Mondeo estate picked up four teenagers near the Carpe Diem pub, North Hill, at about 04:50 on Sunday.

    When they arrived at the lane the four teenagers left the taxi without paying. The driver followed one of the group who, along with another person, assaulted the taxi driver, police said.

    The victim, a 46-year-old man, sustained head and facial injuries and was treated in hospital.

    St Austell and Newquay MP Steve Double has joined others urging the government's rapid approval to build a new runway at London's Heathrow Airport.

    He and an influential group of Cornish business chiefs and politicians have written to new Transport Secretary Chris Grayling, saying "that following the vote to leave the EU, the economic case for a new runway has never been stronger" in order to "do more trade with the rest of the globe".

    Heathrow is competing with Gatwick for government permission to expand increasing capacity in the south east. A decision has been delayed until "at least October".

    Exeter City striker Jamie Reid has joined Torquay United on a three-month loan deal.

    Last season the 22-year-old former Northern Ireland Under 20 international had a spell with National League South side Truro City and played 17 times for Exeter City, including the 2-2 FA Cup third round draw with Liverpool.

    "He's a guy who we haven't just brought in to warm the bench, this is a guy who's going to come in and bring the best out of the other two strikers at the club and make sure he's pushing for a start," Torquay boss Kevin Nicholson told BBC Sport.
