  4. St Dennis incinerator: People 'still concerned about impact'published at 14:10 British Summer Time 25 July 2016

    BBC Radio Cornwall

Some people living close to Cornwall's new incinerator and campaigners who are against it remain concerned about the impact it will have on people's lives, despite assurances over air quality monitoring.

The waste-to-energy incinerator in St Dennis is being fired up for its first test burn this week - five years late. It's estimated the plant, which cost about £150m, will be fully operational by the end of the year.

A multi-million pound waste to energy incinerator in Cornwall fired up

Cornwall Council said the plant would be properly monitored by operator Suez and the Environment Agency.

Steve Slade, from the Green Party, said: "It's reassuring to know they are prepared to give a certain amount of scrutiny, but there are still concerns over the level and content of what toxicities are going to come out of the incinerator, and where they’re going to end up. When it rains, how much of that is going to rain over Cornwall? It also seems a very large and expensive project to deal with waste that could be dealt with in a more sustainable and forward-looking manner."
