Newquay's Business Improvement District - a group of local businesses who pay rates into a pot for improving Newquay - has made an "enormous difference" to the town, Chairman Jonathan Start told me.

Mr Start, who's also an estate agent, said it was one of a combination of factors which had turned Newquay around and made it a lifestyle destination.

The seaside town of Newquay prides itself on being the home of British surfing.

Rob Barber runs the Newquay Activity Centre, teaching surfing, bodyboarding and coasteering, and has lived in the town all his life. 

He told me: "I think it's a fantastic coastal town which has a myriad of beautiful beaches and fantastic waves - the best in the UK - and, as a result, it's a fantastic place to live.

"Surfing is essential to the local economy. It's the bread and butter of a lot of industries, particularly the one that I'm involved in ... and the popularity of surfing, and its continued growth, is the lifeblood of the community."

Two French engineers are planning to take a pedal-powered submarine across the Channel.

Antonine Delafargue and Michael De Lagarde have designed and built the sub with the help of Plymouth designer Paul Moorhouse.

They aim to take seven days to cross the Channel from Plymouth to St Malo.

A national company which has its headquarters in Newquay has increased its workforce from three to 40 people in just three years.

Jess Ratty, head of public relations at Crowdfunder UK, said they specialised in helping local entrepreneurs and community groups raise funds - and that did not have to revolve around London.

Pigeon fanciers in east Devon are being asked to check their flocks after more than 40 dead birds were found in a line along the middle of a road near Honiton.

The dead birds were found on Tuesday on the A35 "a few hundred yards apart from each other", police said, external. Officers also found a discarded animal feed bag which they believed was used to transport the dead birds, and a large amount of feathers.   

The force said it was "asking for any pigeon fanciers in the area to check their flock to make sure all are accounted for". It added: "If you have any birds missing, please get in touch."

Police are searching for a scooter or moped rider who snatched a woman's handbag while she was walking in Plymouth.

Officers said the woman, in her 50s, was in Milford Lane in the Whitleigh area between 18:00-18:15 on Sunday when she was passed twice by the dark coloured motorcycle. The rider then took her navy blue handbag on a third pass and rode off in the direction of Budshead Road. She was left shocked but unhurt. 

The rider was described as of medium height and slim build, and wearing a light navy waterproof jacket with a hood and dark long trousers. His helmet was black with either purple or pink markings on the side. Officers have appealed for witnesses.

A man who set up a series of community Facebook groups, after his epilepsy left him registered disabled, said he was providing a place for people to "moan and groan" about the things that needed doing in Newquay.

Jon Goodman said enjoyed living in the resort, which he said was completely full in summer and emptier in the winter months.

A woman whose car was damaged by a falling tree in Cornwall says she's "going to buy a lottery ticket" because of her "lucky escape".

Kirsty Howard had her windscreen damaged when a limb from a 40ft-tall tree fell on to the A39 between Falmouth and Truro at Perranarworthal this morning. The entire tree was chopped down by highways staff because of safety concerns. The incident caused serious traffic jams.

Kirsty said: "It happened so fast. I'm a bit shaken but I've had a fortunate escape, I think I've got to buy a lottery ticket now."

South West Water has admitted raw sewage is being pumped into the sea around the region after heavy rain overwhelmed drainage systems. 

The company said intense rainfall led to run-off from fields and towns combining and affecting bathing water quality. Warnings have been issued on affected beaches. 

Campaign group Surfers Against Sewage said the drainage infrastructure needed to be upgraded.

Ambulance bosses say they want to clarify to care providers when it's appropriate to call for help after a steep rise in demand to deal with elderly people falling.

Analysis by the University of Exeter Medical School is being used by South Western Ambulance Service to try to tackle a 24% increase in 999 calls over the last four years. 

The increase is down to more emergency call-outs to people with mental health problems and elderly people who've fallen. 

Joanna Garrett, from the service, said: "We're interested in working quite closely with a lot of our care home providers to understand when they should call an ambulance or not. We’re looking at ensuring that our care providers feel confident to mobilise people off the floor if they’ve fallen, and they're not injured, and they don't require an ambulance."

The Business Improvement District (BID) in Newquay says it has been working hard behind the scenes to change the way the town is perceived...

There are reports of a serious road accident in the village of Lanner, with the road closed in both directions after a crash involving a blue Ford Fiesta and a VW van. 

A local councillor said police were at the scene just outside Lanner Square on the A393, and two people were taken to hospital.

Debt advisors in Cornwall have welcomed gas and electricity regulator Ofgem's endorsement of proposals to cut customers' energy bills - including a price cap for prepayment meters - because people are "often forced" to have prepay energy. 

The energy regulator said four million pre-pay customers would be protected by an interim price cap from next April.

Becky Moore, Citizens Advice Bureau area co-ordinator for east Cornwall, said: "A lot of people haven't had a choice, because they've got into arrears and received a court order to go on prepay; and private rental landlords often prefer prepayment meters, so people have to use it if they want to accept that housing."

Devon lost to bottom side Oxfordshire by 51 runs in a rain-affected Minor Counties Western Division game at Exeter.

A draw had seemed likely, but visiting captain Jonny Cater declared on 142-2, leaving Devon needing 282 to win.

Despite the efforts of Josh Bess and Matt Golding, the hosts were bowled out for 230 with 19 overs left.

Oxfordshire took 19 points from the game, while Devon are third-bottom after taking just four points.
