    Firefighters in Cornwall are warning about the dangers of old mineshafts after a dog was rescued from an uncapped shaft near Wheal Jane.

    Indie the Golden Retriever was found after being missing for two days. She fell about 20m down the shaft and was rescued after being brought back to the surface by a harness on a pulley, Truro Fire Station said on Facebook, external.

    The station said: "Disused mineshafts are common in Cornwall and everyone should be mindful of these when out and about. They can be hidden by foliage or appear to be capped but can also be far reaching underground."

    The number of events linked to Newquay's surf scene is helping to expand tourism beyond the traditional six-week summer holiday, according to a local business owner.

    More than 40 dead pigeons have been found placed in a line along the middle of a road near Honiton.

    The dead birds were found on Tuesday morning on the A35 near Windmill Garage along Battishorne Way and Weatherhill Road "a few hundred yards apart from each other", police said, external.

    Officers also found "a discarded animal feed bag, which we believe was used to transport these dead birds, and a large amount of feathers." They added that the Wildlife Crime Team "is aware of the incident, as are the RSPB".

    Making training a family affair has reinvigorated Devon-based Olympic runner Jo Pavey, she has told the BBC.

    The 42-year-old has a training regime which is balanced around her son, Jacob, who is almost seven, and little Emily who is approaching her third birthday. Husband Gavin also being her coach definitely means everything is kept in the family.

    "As a mum, it's made me enjoy my running more. It's made me feel happy in my personal life," she said before one of her last training sessions on British soil before jumping on a plane to Brazil.

    "It used to be my husband with a little boy on the back of a bike, but now my little girl goes on the back of the bike and my little boy's like a training partner now - he just whizzes ahead of me on his bike and I can't keep up with him. It's really kept my motivation going at this old age that I am now."

    A 10-year-old girl has been found safe after being reported missing at Perranporth. 

    Police said they were alerted at 10:45 and were assisted by RNLI lifeguards. The girl was found just after 11:00.

    A Cornwall neighbourhood policing team has had to take down its Facebook page after it was hacked, external and a pornographic image was apparently posted on it. 

    Police Community Support Officer Kirsty Down confirmed the page had been "deactivated" in a Tweet, external.

    She said: "We apologise if anyone was offended by the content posted."

    Britain's Border Force has a "worryingly low" number of boats to patrol the UK's coasts, MPs have said, amid concerns that coastal security is under threat from people smugglers.

    The Home Affairs Select Committee said that only three boats were available to patrol 7,000 miles of shoreline. Royal Navy vessels should be made available to plug any gaps, it said.

    Border Force vessels are occasionally seen in Falmouth Harbour and around the South West.

    The UK has a total of five Border Force vessels, but one has been deployed to the Mediterranean and another is in dock for maintenance. The Home Office said it makes use of radar and aerial surveillance and has ordered eight more boats.

    Newquay is now famous for surfing but, back in the 1960s, the shops that are now ubiquitous with the sport were more unusual.
