  17. Why are the South West NHS trusts and commissioners struggling to balance their books?published at 15:04 British Summer Time 4 August 2016

    Jenny Walrond, Health Correspondent
    BBC Spotlight

Quite simply the demand for services is growing faster than the funding available.

There are a few key reasons for this:

    • Here in the South West we are experiencing the impact of an ageing population earlier than other areas
    • The cost of treatment of chronic conditions  - in England the NHS is now paying almost a billion pounds a year for diabetes medication for example
    • The cost of ongoing care packages
    • Public expectation that innovative - but expensive - new treatments will be available to us

Throughout the country, health trusts and commissioners have been grouped and told to deliver so called "sustainability and transformation plans", which explain how they will run our health services more efficiently, but also improve our health.

We'll find out more about these plans in the coming months.
