    Three men damaged a rhino sculpture when they threw a brick at the object aimed at highlighting the plight of the endangered species, police have said.

    Officers said the attack took place between 02:30 and 02:45 on Saturday in the Goldsmith Square in the Guildhall Shopping Centre, Exeter.

    It is one of 40 that make up The Great Big Rhinos Project, external in Exeter and on the English Riviera.

    Police are trying to trace the attackers. One of the men is described as wearing a long sleeved white T-shirt, with blue lettering and a red logo on the left arm, dark blue jeans and blue training shoes with a white band around the sole. 

    Another was wearing a dark hooded top with a purple lanyard hanging out of the pocket, dark blue jeans, and red training shoes with a white band around the sole. The third man was wearing a white polo shirt, grey combat trousers and white training shoes.

    Young British surfers will have the chance to compete against the best in the world thanks to the sport being chosen for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, say South West-based organisers.

    "Surfers from Scotland, Wales, England and the Channel Islands have the chance to compete for Team GB against the world's best, on the greatest and most prestigious stage of all, the Olympic Games.  

    "Great Britain boasts a wealth of surfing talent and this is our chance to be part of surfing history. A challenge that surfing will rise to and embrace."

    Could you live without the internet - maybe you do and don't get why so many people walk around with a phone in their hand?

    Well research out today from Ofcom suggests well over a half of UK internet users say they are "hooked" on their devices, so that's things like checking Facebook or maybe news websites on their mobile phone or tablet.

    Plus, are children in 2016 lazier than they were when we were growing up?

    Homes, businesses and farms, all could be demolished if plans for a new road to ease congestion on one of the main routes into the South West goes ahead. 

    Devon County Council wants to build a new route to speed up traffic on the A30 through the Blackdown Hills. Two possible routes are being proposed - one, called the 'blue route', would involve demolishing properties.

    Dennis Munt, who has lived in his house - which could be demolished - said: "If it's going to happen, make it quick. If they're going to take the house, take it, so we can move somewhere else and enjoy the rest of the time we have."

    No-one from Devon County Council would be interviewed, but a statement said they had launched an extensive public consultation so everyone could have a say on the proposals to upgrade the road.

    A spokesman said: "As is being witnessed with all of the Man Engine events, there is an unprecedented demand and enthusiasm from residents and visitors alike to experience this epic, mechanical artwork, and to see the remarkable surrounding spectacle."

    Councillor Julian German, chairman of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Partnership said: "At all events, to avoid disappointment, we are urging members of the public to plan ahead, allow plenty of time, to arrive early, and stay later, and be patient."

    Exeter Chiefs should change their name and stop "playing Indian" according to an expert in Native American history.

    Dr Rachel Herrmann, from the University of Southampton, criticised the team, which re-branded as the Chiefs in 1999, for their use of Native American imagery.

    A spokesman for the club said they had no comment to make on the claims or the name change call.

    Colin Taylor is on duty as the Isles of Scilly police sergeant for the last time today.

    The 'Scilly Sergeant' is moving to a new police job on the mainland after seven years on St Mary's. 

    He became famous for his Isles of Scilly Police Facebook page which has around 58,000 followers. His book about policing the 2,000 inhabitants was published earlier this year. The 49-year-old is moving, with his wife and two teenage children, to Devon where he will become a detective sergeant in the Devon and Cornwall Police Child Sexual Exploitation Investigation Unit.

    Cornwall-based surfer Tassy Swallow has welcomed surfing being named among five new sports confirmed for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

    "I think personally it's brilliant."

    She said it was "everybody's dream" to compete in the Olympics and she would love to take part.

    There are fears homes and businesses could be demolished if a new road into East Devon goes ahead. Devon County Council's plans are intended as a solution to congestion on the A30 through the Blackdown Hills.

    Local people have told the BBC they're "upset and angry" at the proposals. 

    But, Alan Stone, who is a frequent business driver between Exeter and Yeovil, is in favour of the new road. He said: "The direct route is the route people want to take and you end up with the road snarled up and I think it will make a considerable difference."

    In a statement, Devon County Council said it had launched an extensive public consultation so everyone could have a say on the proposals to upgrade the road.

    A driver who was trapped in the wreckage of his car after a crash with a bus near Tiverton has been rescued by fire crews.

    Firefighters found the car in a hedge and cut the driver free. Three passengers on the bus suffered minor injuries.

    It happened on the A396 at Bickleigh Bridge, just after 14:00 yesterday.
