There's a drier night to come tonight, with some clear spells developing, leading to a cool night, especially in any rural spots such as Dartmoor. Minimum temperature: 10C (50F).

Wednesday will see a dry and bright at first, although the skies will cloud over through the morning. Outbreaks of rain will spread in from the west from lunchtime. Maximum temperature: 18C (64F).

A new campaign is under way in the South West to end the problem of loneliness, which is having a chronic effect on people's health.

Public Health Devon and the Campaign to End Loneliness want businesses to contact them if they suspect their customers are suffering from social isolation.

The mother of Olympic bronze medal-winning diver Daniel Goodfellow has hit out at newspapers after some did not feature her son in photographs of the success. 

Daniel and diving partner Tom Daley came third in the men's synchronised 10m platform dive in Rio on Monday. 

Sharon Goodfellow said she was "surprised" a number of papers featured only Tom on their front and back pages. Ms Goodfellow took to Twitter to thank people for their support.

However, Daniel said: "To me it doesn't really matter."

A parish council is to seek advice from public health officials about the aftermath of a blaze at a tyre recycling centre in west Cornwall.

Fire crews are still at the scene in St Erth after the fire broke out at about 20:00 on Monday. Thousands of gallons of foam are being sprayed over the fire to try to suffocate the blaze.

Ted Taylor, chairman of St Erth Parish Council, said the "very acrid" smoke had been "leaving a really sooty deposit in some parts of the village". He added: "This is something we will be discussing with public health to find out what's going to happen."

People in Plymouth are healthier than they were 70 years ago but there are still worrying levels of inequality, a new report says.

The study's been written by the city council's Director of Public Health and looks at the links between poverty and wellbeing since the 1940s.

Recommendations include improving housing and helping disadvantaged children gain better qualifications.

He said that humanising policing had brought him followers from across the world, but that it hadn't all been a barrel of laughs, and sometimes the team needed to tow the line.

He said: "I'm not here to be liked. I've crossed swords many times with people who don't want to talk to me anymore. Sometimes you've got to break a few eggs to make an omelette, I'm not here to make friends.

"But I've also built great relationships with many people. That mix is what policing is all about."

A loneliness epidemic will soon engulf Devon and the rest of the South West, according to Public Health Devon. 

The county is facing 25% of its population being over the age of 65 by 2030, and suffering chronic loneliness has the same negative effects on health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day, speeding up dementia and leading to an earlier death. 

This is why a campaign to end loneliness is holding a symposium in Exeter with Healthwatch Devon and other charities to get businesses to help spot lonely older people.

Newquay has been described as "a safer place" after the jailing of a 20-year-old man who threatened a woman working in a store with a knife, a senior police officer says.

Kieran Wait, from Newquay, was jailed last Friday at Truro Crown Court for 21 months after pleading guilty to attempted robbery. The court heard he tried to rob Central Pet Supplies at the Chester Road market in the town on 7 April. He fled empty-handed.

Insp Dave Meredith, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "Armed robbery is a very serious offence and Newquay is a safer place with Mr Wait behind bars. The custodial sentence imposed by the court reflects the gravity of the offence committed."

A man has been crushed to death by a hay bale on Dartmoor, external.

A nursing home in Yelverton that cares for people with dementia has been kept in special measures. 

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commissions made an unannounced visit to Devonia House in June. They deemed the service inadequate, with people's health, safety and welfare put at risk. 

The home was put in special measures in April 2015 but, on subsequent visits, inspectors have found improvements have not been achieved.   

“What an amazing result for Dan and Tom – and for Plymouth Diving," said city councillor Glenn Jordan, after Tom Daley and Dan Goodfellow won bronze at Rio.

He said: "We’re so proud to have so many of our divers and swimmers representing Team GB out in Rio. They’ve all worked incredibly hard to be there and I’m sure the city is behind me in saying a massive congratulations to our new Olympic bronze medallists.

“Good luck to Tonia Couch, who is competing with Lois Toulson in the women’s 10m synchro tonight and to swimmer Ben Proud in the men’s 100m freestyle qualifiers.”

A mother has warned people against taking "horrendous" drugs, formerly known as legal highs, after a body was found in the search for her missing teenage son.

A body was found on Sunday by search teams looking for Nathan near the River Dart, in Totnes in Devon, where he was last seen. It was feared he had fallen into the river after taking a "new pyschoactive substance" (NPS). 

His mother, Mandi Retter, said the death of the 16-year-old had "screwed up our lives forever". She added that NPS should be "avoided like the plague", saying she did not want any other young lives to be lost so needlessly.
