    The Isles of Scilly are not a big place. There's a population of just 2,200 people over five inhabited islands, plus countless uninhabited islands. Despite this, the Isles of Scilly Police Facebook, external page has attracted 60,000 likes - the same amount as the whole of the Devon and Cornwall Police force page.

    Much of this has been down to Sgt Colin Taylor, who also has a blog, external and Twitter account, external which has gained thousands of followers.

    "It's been remarkable, a truly unique policing experience," Sgt Taylor said. "I've used social media to give myself a voice here for people on the island, I never expected it to take off like it has, our posts have exploded over social media.

    "It's not just me, there are a team of us making it work. I think people like hearing about what the police do and a bit more about behind the scenes. A lot of police officers use social media to keep in touch with people, hopefully our page will encourage more people. I think if you're honest, people will want to interact."

    A fire that ripped through a tyre recycling plant at St Erth is so severe fire crews are expected to be on site for several days. 

    More than 70 firefighters from stations across Cornwall and west Devon have been tackling the blaze. 

    Train services into west Cornwall are severely affected with trains terminating at Truro, with the St Ives branch line not operating today.

    National Rail Enquiries says GWR tickets can be used on First Buses, external on routes 14 - St Ives to Truro, 17 - Penzance - St Ives and 18 - Penzance to Truro.

    The fire (photographed on Monday evening below) also affected the A30, which only reopened mid-morning today.

    Debbie Daley, from Plymouth, said: "We had a toast to Tom, but he just had a bottle of water! He's still not drinking, he's focused on the Olympics and he's working towards the indivdual now."

    More than a 1,000 people in Torbay have responded to a Facebook page offering their support for a fundraising event for Rowcroft Hospice. 

    Last month it announced it was having to scale back services and would need to make more than £1m in savings by the end of this year in order to protect its long-term future.

    A decline in the hospice's legacy income, increase in demand for services and financial pressures on the NHS had led to the current funding position, bosses said.

    Now a fun day is being planned at Youngs Park in Goodrington over the August bank holiday weekend to raise funds and encourage more support.

    Have you ever tried to catch a drink-driver on a child's bike? The use of the pursuit vehicle was a case of former Isles of Scilly Sergeant Colin Taylor having to think on his feet, as it were.

    Sgt Taylor, of Devon and Cornwall Police (pictured, but not with the actual bike in question), has written a book highlighting his fighting crime at the extremity of the British Isles, and how he gained tens of thousands of social media followers - despite the islands only having a population of 2,200.

    The 49-year-old said: "People said there's no crime on Scilly, but I've managed to write about it for the last five years. Sometimes things happen and you just have to find the funny side."

    On one occasion Sgt Taylor had to travel across different islands and borrow a child's bike while in pursuit of a suspected drink-driver. He said: "It was lucky the little boy was there with his bike to help me out. Sometimes you've just got to think on your feet and get the job done."

    Devon runner Jo Pavey has said it will be "tough" not having her family with her as she competes at the 2016 Rio Olympics, but that she will be "happier knowing they're OK" away from the current health risks in Brazil.

    The 42-year-old four-time Olympian admitted concerns over the Zika virus stopped her from taking her two children and husband, Gavin, to the games. 

    She told Radio Times: "When I was first targeting qualification for Rio, we presumed that if I did qualify we'd all go, but I don't feel happy taking a young family out there, especially with there being a lot of unknowns regarding the neurological condition."

    There has been widespread concern over the Zika virus in the country, which has led to several athletes pulling out of the Olympics. The mosquito-borne disease is associated with a birth defect which results in children being born with abnormally small heads and brain damage. The World Health Organization said there was a "very low risk" of Zika spreading globally as a result of the Olympics.

    As fire crews remain at the site of a huge fire in Cornwall, GWR has posted this on their website, external: Due to a significant line-side fire near St Erth Station, trains are unable to operate between St Erth and St Ives and between Truro and Penzance.

    Road transport is in place. However, some roads are reported as being heavily congested.

    Therefore, significant delays can be expected. This disruption will likely continue for the remainder of today.

    Fire crews are continuing to apply foam at a fire in St Erth after having been at the scene overnight, Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service says.

    It added: "A multi-agency meeting is taking place ... and a plan of action will be discussed. Mechanical diggers are being sourced to assist at the scene in the removal of flammable material and to allow access for crews to continue firefighting."

    The unemployed and those on low incomes in Torbay could have to pay more council tax, as part of a council drive to save money.

    At the moment, those who qualify for the Council Tax Support Scheme in the Bay, only have to pay 25% of their council tax bill. Torbay Council wants to increase that to 45%. The authority said those struggling to pay would be able to apply for a special hardship fund. 

    The government told the BBC that "significant savings are being made to the public purse through changes in council tax support".

    "It's a perfect set up for Tom's individual," former European bronze medallist Brooke Graddon told BBC Sport. "The pressure that would have built up if he hadn't have got that medal this time would have been even bigger for the individual," she added.

    People in the local area should keep their doors and windows closed and stay inside.

    Fire crews have also warned drivers passing nearby to keep windows closed and air conditioning off.

    Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service is having hourly reviews with Network Rail in an attempt to try and reopen the main line passing through St Erth.

    They expect to be dampening down for the rest of the day, and to stay on site for the next couple of days investigating the cause. 

    They are bringing in more foam throughout today to "attack and suppress" the fire.
