    BBC News Online

The University of Exeter - which also has a campus at Penryn in Cornwall - says it will raise its tuition fees by £250 a year from autumn this year.

The university will put fees up for both new and current students, taking the yearly fee to £9,250 from the beginning of the new academic year.

    Exeter University

It comes after the government said universities with "high quality" teaching would be allowed to raise fees above the current £9,000 bar.

The move has been called "completely unacceptable" by the Lib Dem education spokesman, John Pugh. The university's vice chancellor said the decision had not been taken lightly, but it followed four years of a freeze in fees whilst the costs of delivering education had continued to rise.

    BBC Newsbeat

We know, lots of you are very excited having secured the grades you were hoping for... but if you didn't get the A-level results you wanted, you might be thinking of retaking a year.

Take a look at his guide in full for how to cope, but he says the main things are:

    • Work out what went wrong first time round
    • Are A-levels really for you?
    • Other people are in the same boat
    • Don't try to be the cool guy from the year above (you won't make new friends that way)
    • You WON'T lose all your old friends
    • A year really isn't that long

  18. Public spending on bus services 'dropped by millions'published at 11:30 British Summer Time 18 August 2016

    Harriet Bradshaw
    Reporter

Public spending on bus services in the South West has dropped by millions of pounds over the past five years, the Campaign for Better Transport has said.

One service in Exeter, the 972, that used to be subsidised, is now being axed by Stagecoach - because the company says it's now not commercially viable. Suzie Tosh is leading a campaign group to get it reinstated as families say it's a vital link to their children's school.

    Bus stop

Devon County Council said: "Due to ongoing funding reductions from central government, we withdrew financial support in 2011 for public bus services operating primarily to schools for pupils not entitled to county council supported transport.

"The 972 was among the services where support was withdrawn in 2011, but Stagecoach continued the service on a commercial basis. Stagecoach is no longer able to do this but alternative commercial local bus services are available.

"The county council has a statutory responsibility to provide free school transport and with an annual budget of £21.6m, but does not have funding to support transport for children who are not eligible under the DCC Education Transport Policy."
