An elderly man has been rescued from his home in Tiverton after he reported smoke in the property.

An operator in the fire service control room kept him on the phone and gave him advice as two crews went to the property in Spurway Road yesterday evening.

They got in through the first floor window and rescued him. The smoke was coming from food which had been left on the cooker in the kitchen.

It claims many routes are now being cut because they're no longer financially viable.

But, a group of schoolchildren from Exeter, who use the 972 bus, are campaigning to reinstate it after Stagecoach said it was axing the service as it could no longer afford to run it. In response the company says there are alternative services.
