    If you have lost someone or something you love, gone are the days of relying on the authorities or word of mouth. Social media is now in charge and it is proving to be very successful.  

    Thanks to the power of Facebook, and the honesty of the Cornish public, a couple from Cornwall were reunited with their missing engagement ring after a successful social media campaign.

    Ring found in St Ives

    Abbie Storr and her fiance Jacob were visiting St Ives when she lost her diamond engagement ring in the town centre at the weekend.

    After being shared on the BBC Radio Cornwall Facebook page and the Cornwall Lost and Found Facebook page, 48 frantic hours later Abbie was reunited with her ring.

    BBC News has examined other occasions social media has saved the day and reunited an individual with something dear to them or found them something they desperately need.

    Two men were arrested after the body of Michael Horner was discovered inside as property in Newlyn last year.

    Concern was raised for the welfare of the 48-year-old on Tuesday 29 December 2015.

    Devon and Cornwall Police launched a murder investigation to investigate the circumstances of the death, and two men were arrested.

    One man, from the area, has since been charged with murder. The other person - a 43-year-old local man - "will have no further policing action taken against him", police said.

    Fire crews have tackled a blaze at the incinerator in Plymouth.

    Three fire engines attended the site at about 22:10 on Wednesday after reports of smoke were made to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

    The fire service said there "was a lot of smoke in the premises" and there was a fire in the waste bunker.

    A spokesman said: "On site staff removed the smouldering waste from the bunker using a mechanical grabber and crews checked the area with two breathing apparatus wearers and a thermal imaging camera. Duty of care was left with on site staff."

    Public spending on local bus services in the wider South West has fallen by more than £10m in the last five years, the Campaign for Better Transport says.  

    A Department for Transport spokesman said: "Buses make vital journeys possible for hard-working people around the country every day. 

    "Decisions on funding for local bus services are a matter for local authorities. We have committed around £10.5m to support bus services serving local communities in the South West and our Bus Services Bill, external gives councils powers to partner with bus companies to improve customer service and boost bus use."

    The British Fireworks Championships concluded on Plymouth Hoe last night.

    Six of the country’s greatest professional display teams battled it out over two nights to mark the 20th year of the championships.

    Gala Fireworks, from Northampton, has been crowned the British Firework Champion 2016.

    Runner up this year was Aurora Fireworks, from West Sussex, and in third place was F1 Pyrotechnics, from West Sussex.

    The Conservative MP and Chair of the Health Select Committee Dr Sarah Wollaston has said changes made to the government's strategy to tackle child obesity "show the hand of big industry lobbyists".

    Speaking on 5 Live Breakfast, she said she was "hugely disappointed" and "cross" that "whole sections from the original draft have been dropped".

    She added the proposals to restrict the marketing and advertising around junk food, such as curbs on TV ads or cheap deals on junk food, could have made a "real difference really quickly".

    A public meeting will be held today to voice concerns at plans to demolish homes to make way for a major new road in Devon. 

    The county council wants to ease congestion on the A30 in east Devon, but Monkton parish council says it will oppose any demolitions. 

    Devon County Council is holding a public consultation on the plan which involves an alternative route through the Blackdown Hills.

    A man has been charged with murder following the death of Michael Horner in West Cornwall.

    Devon and Cornwall Police said a man from the local area had been charged with murder and was due to appear before Bodmin Magistrates Court this morning.  

    Officers were called to a property in Gwavas Road, Newlyn, on Tuesday 29 December 2015 after concern was raised for the welfare of the 48-year-old man living there. 

    Officers discovered the body of Michael Horner inside.
