    A new programme is starting tonight featuring one of the world's most experienced explorers, Paul Rose.

    Coastal Path will begin this evening on BBC One South West at 19:30 and will be available afterwards on the BBC iPlayer.

    The show aims to celebrate the coastal challenge, and give you some tips on how to tackle it for yourself.

    Exeter and England centre Ollie Devoto is confident his new team will sustain their Premiership form after finishing runners-up, unlike his old side Bath.

    Devoto, 22, played 16 league games last season as Bath went from losing the final in 2014-15 to finishing ninth.

    Saracens defended their Premiership title at Twickenham in May, beating Rob Baxter's play-off debutants Exeter.

    "There were a number of things that led to Bath not really performing well last season," Devoto told BBC Sport.

    An inquest will open in Truro later into the death of Rudy Bruynius who died after being swept into the sea from rocks near Fistral Beach along with his wife and daughter. 

     Mr Bruynius was on holiday in the Newquay area with his family when it happened last Friday.

    His two-year-old daughter remains in a critical condition in hospital. Two other children managed to stay on the rocks.

    A worldwide ban on plastic microbeads in cosmetics should be imposed as soon as possible, MPs have demanded.

    The Environmental Audit Committee says the tiny balls of plastic used in shower gels and facial scrubs can even be found in Arctic sea-ice and on the ocean floor.

    Professor Tamara Galloway from Exeter University said: “We find pieces of plastic in every sample of seawater we study from round the world. Many marine animals ingest microbeads, mistaking them for food. They can then be lodged in the animals’ gut – preventing them from eating nutritious food."

    The government says it will consider a ban on microbeads in cosmetics if the EU doesn’t legislate against them.

    The South West Coast Path is 630 miles long and those who walk its entirety climb the equivalent of Mount Everest four times!

    You can see one of the world's most experienced explorers, Paul Rose, get his first taste of that challenge on BBC One SW tonight.

  8. Toaster fire tackled by crewspublished at 10:13 British Summer Time 24 August 2016

    Fire crews have tackled a toaster fire in a kitchen in Peter Tavy, near Tavistock.

    Three engines attended the fire on Langsford Road at 21:40 on Tuesday evening. 

    The toaster was "severely damaged" in the fire and the kitchen had smoke damage, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said.

    Plans to transfer the management of public green spaces in Exeter to a local wildlife trust are to be discussed by the city council next month.

    The council's scrutiny committee is to consider a proposal that the long-term management of areas including Riverside, Barley Valley and Whitycombe Way be transferred to the Devon Wildlife Trust. 

    The council said that, if approved, the authority would still continue to own the sites.

    A new way of monitoring the climate could help farmers in the South West grow exotic crops such as quinoa and japanese persimmon.

    Parts of Cornwall have been officially sub-tropical since 2000.

    Now researchers at the University of Exeter are using a drone to map a detailed guide of the smallest variations in climate conditions, which could change what's farmed in the county.
