Paignton Zoo antelope put to sleep after escape

A man who lives close to a Devon zoo which had to recapture an escaped antelope said he was able to direct the staff to the animal after he followed it.

The lechwe antelope was tranquilised after escaping from Paignton Zoo. Mike Langman was leaving his house at about 08:30 when he saw the animal "come around the corner from behind the trees".

The wildlife enthusiast said he approached the animal in a bid to stop it running into the road and followed it into Brantwood Drive. He said: "Not many people actually saw it - only a few of us that live here."

The animal was recaptured but later put down because it was "impossible to return the escapee to the herd, or find a suitable new home for him", the zoo said.
