    A Flood Alert has been issued by the Environment Agency for rivers in west Cornwall. 

    The agency said: "Flooding is possible for Lands End, Helston, Crowlas, St Ives, Hayle, Camborne, Portreath and Perranporth. 

    "Low lying land and roads will be affected first. Be prepared."

    Standing water and debris has been reported on roads across west Cornwall because of flash flooding.

    In Devon:

    • Traffic is very slow-moving between Tor Hill Road and Abbey Road 
    • In Exeter, traffic is slow-moving westbound at East Wonford Hill, between Rifford Road and Magdalen Road 
    • Also around Exeter, traffic is slow at Clyst St Mary, on the A376 eastbound between Junction 30 of the M5 and the A3052 
    • In Plymouth, one lane has been closed and traffic is slow on the A38 eastbound at St Budeaux because of an incident 
    • Rail services will be disrupted between Exeter St Davids and Exmouth until 10:00

    People have been trapped in their homes as a result of storms which caused flash floods in Cornwall.

    Fire crews have been called to deal with incidents across Falmouth, Camborne, Helston and Redruth from about 15:00 on Tuesday. 

    Fire Service Group Manager Nathaniel Hooton said: "We had a large number of properties affected by the floods. That ranged from water being 1ft high in some areas, and up to waist high in others. In affected areas... some people became essentially trapped in their houses."

    One person was given medical attention after lightning hit a terrace of houses near Helston during storms which caused flash floods in Cornwall.

    The fire service was called to deal with incidents across Falmouth, Camborne, Helston and Redruth from about 15:00 BST on Tuesday. Cars were abandoned in flood water, with drivers having to be rescued by the emergency services. 

    Fire crews were called to four properties near Helston after a lightning strike, with one casualty treated for effects of smoke.

    Storms have caused chaos in Cornwall, with the west of the county bearing the brunt of the storm.

    There are reports of serious flooding, and least two schools have been forced to close: Trewirgie Junior School and Redruth School. Pictures on social media show flooding in Falmouth, Truro, Redruth and Camborne (pictured). 

    The fire service said it had an extremely busy night, with numerous 999 calls for crews out to help people whose homes were severely flooded.

    The Environment Agency has issued a Flood Warning for the Portreath Stream, and flooding is expected to affect Portreath Community Primary School.

    A Flood Alert has been issued for surface water flooding in Lands End, Helston, Crowlas, St Ives, Hayle, Camborne, Portreath and Perranporth.

    Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service was 'extremely busy' with calls due to flooding last night.

    A statement from the service said: "We have been extremely busy dealing with numerous 999 calls in the west of the county, crews from Camborne, Redruth, Helston and the surrounding areas have been assisting property owners that have been severely flooded."

    Flash floods are causing chaos in parts of Cornwall after lightning strikes and heavy rain hit the county.

    The fire service was called to deal with incidents across Falmouth, Camborne, Helston and Redruth from about 15:00 yesterday, with further storms at 19:00 and 03:00.

    More than 400 homes were left without power and Trewirgie Junior School and Redruth School will be closed today.
