    A former pilot has denied attempting to murder his tenant in an axe attack.

    Andrew Barnes, aged 60, is accused of attacking 29-year-old tenant Luke Down with a long handled axe and a knife near the home they shared at Altamira, Topsham, on September 5 this year.

    Mr Barnes denied a single charge of attempted murder when he appeared by video link at Exeter Crown Court.

    Mr Down, also known as Luke Carthew, is still being treated for serious head injuries at Derriford Hospital.

    Judge Erik Salomonsen adjourned the case for a trial on 13 February next year. Barnes was remanded in custody.

    The Environment Agency will remove a temporary bridge that has kept traffic flowing along the A39 in Cannington while flood defences have been constructed.

    The bridge allowed engineers to create a flood alleviation channel beneath the road to improve the flood defence of around 200 homes in Cannington.

    To remove the bridge, the A39 will be closed for 24 hours between 19:00 on Saturday, 8 October and 19:00 on Sunday - a diversion will be in place.

    Flood defence work began in April and is due to be finished in the early new year.

    A suspected drug smuggler "jumped intentionally" from the mast of his yacht with the intention of killing himself, an inquest jury has ruled. 

    Christiaan Woestenburg, 62, climbed the 40ft mast as Border Force officers searched his yacht in St Mary's harbour on the Isles of Scilly in June 2013.

    The vessel Windrose contained 120kg of cocaine estimated to be worth between £8m and £18m, the inquest heard. 

    Cornwall coroner Ian Arrow recorded a suicide verdict.

    A man with dementia has gone missing from his home in Torquay and police are asking the public for their help in finding him.

    Alfred Higham, 74, was last seen at around 09:30 BST on Sherwell Valley Road in Torquay.

    An "opportunistic" thief stole a bag from a kitchen table in a Dawlish flat while someone was in the property, Devon and Cornwall Police, external believe.

    The burglary in Queen Street took place last Friday between 22:00 and 22:15, with the thief getting into the flat through an insecure door.

    A Devon female rugby player who suffered a fatal injury following a tackle at a training session in December has been given a posthumous award, after her organs saved the lives of at least four other people.

    The family of 22-year-old Lily Partridge, who played for Exonian Ladies, received the Orderof St John , externalaward for Organ Donation at a ceremony in her home town of Exeter.

    Cornwall Council, external has spent £1,000 sending representatives to all three major political party conferences. 

    Deputy Leader Adam Paynter told a full meeting of the council it had never been more important for the authority to make its voice heard at a time when the interests of Cornwall have to be raised.

    When asked if the council should send to Green Party, external and Mebyon Kernow, external conferences, Mr Paynter said it was important to engage with smaller parties and that the SNP, external was another party to speak to.

    Former Plymouth Argyle manager Neil Warnock told reporters it was "unusual" for him to get on well with supporters.

    The journeyman manager was speaking to the media as he takes the reins at Cardiff City.

    A gibbon at Paignton Zoo who has turned 40 has been described as "friendly and sedate".

    Naomi now lives a quiet life after being paired up and bred in the past - but she was not particularly sociable with her last male partner and there is a lack of available mates.

    She now shares an island at the zoo with orangutan Gambira.

    Zookeeper Neil said: "They keep each other at arm’s length – which of course for both gibbons and orangs is quite long - and they are more or less indifferent to one another.”

    The director of a door company who is facing manslaughter charges is a "man of integrity", Guildford Crown Court has heard.

    Fisherman's Friends vocalist Trevor Grills, 54, and Paul McMullen, 44, died after a steel door collapsed at G Live in Guildford on 9 February 2013.

    David Naylor, 57, director of Express Hi-Fold Doors Ltd, denies two charges of manslaughter by gross negligence.
