    It was a party that was always going to go with a swing - Naomi the grey gibbon at Paignton Zoo Environmental Park has turned 40.

    She celebrated with a gibbon-friendly cake made by her keepers using ingredients such as primate pellet and carrot, and a box of wood wool which contained a lucky dip of grapes and small fruit bits.

    She shares her island home at the zoo with female Bornean orangutan Gambira - both species comes from the island of Borneo.  

  3. Police appeal for witnesses after serious crashpublished at 15:00 British Summer Time 6 October 2016

    Emergency services were called to a crash between to cars on the A3075 near Truro yesterday.

    One of the passengers was seriously injured and taken to Treliske Hospital. She is now in a stable condition.

    The Perranporth Road was closed about 12:30 and reopened about 16:00. Diversions were put in place and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

    Officers are appealing for witnesses.

    Women facing changes to the retirement age from 60 to 65 have won support from South Hams District Council in their campaign for "transitional funding arrangements".

    Sandra Broadbent of Women Against State Pension Inequality said: "The campaign is asking for fair transitional financial arrangements for 1950's women as they have had the biggest change and the least notice, and some women had no notice at all.

    "The majority of councils in Devon have supported the motion, and we thank South Hams for supporting us, we have not yet had the opportunity to present the motion to West Devon and Torridge but hope to do so in the future."

    Councillor Nicky Hopwood, ward member for Woolwell, who proposed the motion, explains: "Government changes to the Pension Act have moved the female pension age to 65, and this has adversely affected hundreds of thousands of women.

    "The implementation has been too rapid and happened without sufficient notice being given to the women affected. This has left many women with no time to make alternative arrangements."

    Devon and Cornwall Police, external are asking people in Torquay to keep their eyes open for 74-year-old Alfred Higham who's missing from his home.

    Alfred, who has dementia, was last seen at about 09:30 in Sherwell Valley Road.

    He's about 5ft 9in tall (1.75m), clean shaven, with mousey coloured hair and was wearing a green, red and white rugby shirt, green jacket, blue jeans and blue trainers.

    The 39-year-old is still registered, but has not played since taking joint control of the side in the summer.

    "Hopefully I won't have to play too many games as the guys are doing a super job," Paver told BBC Cornwall. "Tyler Gendall and Jack Andrew have switched over to tighthead and are doing a superb job there, so I want to get them as much game time as possible."

    A Jack Russell dog with an eye condition is getting mobbed by photographers because of his protective dark glasses.

    Jaxs already has a number of conditions including an allergy to grass which means he has to wear boots on his paws. 

    But the paparazzi-style treatment is making Jaxs scared of people says owner Maria Domanic from Malborough in Devon. 

    Jaxs suffers from inflammation of his eye-lids and the glasses followed advice from vets to shield his eyes.

    "We've been surrounded by people shoving cameras in his face," said Ms Domanic.

    "He's 14 and he deserves a peaceful life."

    A Plymouth nursery has extended its opening hours to try and help parents struggling to get through the congestion caused by work on the outskirts of the city.

    Temporary traffic lights at Deep lane Junction off the A38 at Plympton have seen traffic tailing back up to one mile. 

    Some drivers said it had added more than one-hour to their commute.

    Kiddi Caru nursery said it was doing what it can to help parents.

    Devon County Council Highways have apologised for any inconvenience and told the BBC in the long-term the improvements will increase the capacity of the Deep Lane junction and will improve journey times.

    A 22-year-old female rugby player, who died from a head injury after being tackled during a training session, has been given a posthumous award.

    Lily Partridge from Exeter, played for Exonian Ladies and hoped one day to play for her country.

    The zookeeper and teaching assistant, whose organs helped save the lives of at least four people, received the Order of St John award for Organ Donation at a ceremony in Exeter.

    Cornwall Council will discuss the possibility of opposing any plans to bring back grammar schools in the county.

    Labour councillor Tim Dwelly has introduced a motion, external to be discussed at today's full council meeting which states: "This council believes Cornwall should, as part of the Cornwall Deal, have the power to reject the introduction of grammar schools."

    The government is currently formulating plans to launch new grammar schools across the country.

    The jury in the trial of a man accused of the manslaughter by gross negligence of two men from the Cornish sea shanty band the Fisherman's Friends, are today going on a site visit to see a similar door to the one which struck them at a music venue in Guildford.

    In February 2013, the two-tonne metal door at G Live collapsed hitting singer Trevor Grills and the band's promoter Paul McMullen. Mr McMullen died at the scene and Mr Grills died in hospital a few days later. 

    David Naylor, 57, from Bridgnorth in Shropshire denies the charges. The trial continues.

    The most powerful Caribbean hurricane in nearly a decade has hit Haiti, bringing 230km/h (145mph) winds, heavy rain and dangerous storm surges. 

    Hurricane Matthew, a Category Four storm, has led to a number of deaths in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. 

    Southern Haiti has effectively been cut off after the bridge linking it to the capital, Port-au-Prince, collapsed.

    The closure of inpatient beds at Torrington Community Hospital is not suitable for a full review by the Secretary of State according to a panel which advises the government on changes to the NHS.

    The Independent Reconfiguration Panel says the original consultation was flawed but reopening the beds at this late stage is not a viable option.

    Councillor Margaret Brown of the Campaign to Save Torrington Hospital,said: "It's not the end of the road. We will be looking for Devon County Council and our local NHS to be called to account."
