The MP for Exeter says budget cuts for community pharmacies in England will be damaging.

    pharmacy

The money's being cut from 2.8bn to 2.6bn.

The government says there's a need to save money, as some areas have several pharmacies very close together.

There'll be extra funding for isolated areas with fewer pharmacies but Labour MP for Exeter, Ben Bradshaw said: "Cutting community pharmacies is the very last place you would begin, because they take the pressure off GP surgeries and hospitals. The government should be investing more in them, not cutting them."

  3. Cornwall MP concerned EU funding will not create enough jobspublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 20 October 2016

A Cornwall MP is raising concerns that hundreds of millions of pounds of EU regional funding for the county won't create enough jobs.

    Scott Mann

The government's guaranteed some long-term projects which have already been given EU money.

But the Conservative Scott Mann said: "Under Cornwall Council's own figures from the EU spend, only 1,300 jobs will be created from a £350m spend between now and 2020."

Brexit Minister David Jones replied: "The chancellor has guaranteed structural funding until 2020. It is important these programmes deliver value for money so the government will be liaising closely with devolved administrations and local authorities such as Cornwall."

A Muslim convert who was jailed for 18 years for trying to blow up the Giraffe restaurant in Devon on 22 May 2008 by detonating bombs in bottles filled with nails has died.

Nicky Reilly had viable bombs that could have caused "dreadful destruction", but while he was preparing to detonate the bombs - containing about 500 nails, caustic soda and kerosene - one exploded in his hands.

Sentencing, Mr Justice Calvert-Smith said it was "sheer luck or chance that [the bombing] did not succeed in its objectives".

"The offence of attempted murder is aggravated by the fact that it was long-planned, that it had multiple intended victims and was intended to terrorise the population of this country," he added.

Police believe Reilly, from Plymouth, was encouraged by extremists in Pakistan.

I was there at the Old Bailey when Nicky Reilly was sentenced.

In the public gallery, his mother Kim wept through much of the hearing.

She always said her son was vulnerable and preyed on by extremists, who used him by pretending to be his friends.

But Reilly himself showed no remorse.

And he had viable bombs, which could have caused dreadful destruction had they detonated in the way Reilly intended on that spring day, back in 2008.

Reilly had learning difficulties and Asperger Syndrome.

  18. Tribunal finds former medical director 'failed to protect patients' of disgraced gynaecologistpublished at 15:03 British Summer Time 20 October 2016

    BBC Radio Cornwall

A tribunal has found a former medical director at the Royal Cornwall Hospital failed to take appropriate steps to protect patients of disgraced gynaecologist Rob Jones.

    RCHT

More than 200 former patients of Mr Jones, who also practiced as an obstetrician, are taking legal action against the hospital trust for the harm they say was done to them under his care.

It was in 2008 that Robert Pitcher accepted assurances from Mr Jones that he had either not mismanaged patients or had learned appropriately from his failures.

The tribunal found Mr Pitcher didn't instigate a further review of Rob Jones' practice and allowed him to return to full and unrestricted practice. A decision will now be taken whether to place sanctions on Mr Robert Pitcher.
