    Hundreds of people have been to Cathedral Green in Exeter to see for themselves the demolition of the Royal Clarence Hotel after the huge fire.

    Contractors have put up fencing to keep people away from the area, as specialist structural engineers assess the stability of buildings around the Royal Clarence before demolition, which is expected to begin at 15:00.  

    "I'd just like to see it before they knock the facade down," said one onlooker.

    Another said: "It's devastating, it's part of the city - everyone is saying the same."

    Newton Abbot Rugby Club says its thoughts are with player Sam Harrison who is in an induced coma after collapsing to the ground during a game.

    The 20-year-old had been playing for Newton Abbot’s second XV against Barnstaple at the weekend. 

    Roy Henderson, director of rugby who saw the incident, said:”There was a clash of heads between Sam and another player which didn't look anything untoward at the time. 

    “Sam got up then collapsed on the ground. 

    "The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Sam and his family at this difficult time.”

    Messages of goodwill have been flooding in on the Facebook page of Cornish band Oll an Gwella after three members were injured in a crash., external

    Nick Brown, Andy Pappin and David Bendall were travelling back to the St Columb area from a gig in Newquay on Saturday night when they collided with another vehicle on the A39.

    Nick has been released from hospital, but Andy and driver David remain at Derriford Hospital and Treliske respectively.

    Gareth Price said on Facebook: "Glad things are starting to settle.The three of them remain very much in our thoughts."

    Rena Chaplin said: "Hope you are all on your feet soon."

    Rob Spowart from the band said the men would be recovering for several months. Police said two people in the other car were injured but their condition is unknown.

    Nigel Rabbitts of the Devon and Cornwall Police Federation has called for tougher sentences after it was revealed that nearly 250 police officers and staff have been assaulted at work in the first 10 months of this year.

    Today, the Labour Party will be leading a debate about the issue in the House of Commons - and is calling on the government do more.

    Two members of the well known Cornish singing group Oll an Gwella are in hospital after an accident that closed the A39 near Newquay at the weekend.

    The acapella singers were involved in the crash on their way back from a gig early on Sunday morning. Two remain in hospital, and a third was released yesterday. 

    Police continue to appeal for witnesses to the accident that happened in the early hours of Sunday morning. 

    Rob Spowart, one of the band members, says they will continue to honour all engagements.

    "The prognosis is optimistic but it will be a month or two before they are back singing with us," he said.

    "We just want to extend thoughts and prayers to them and their families and look forward to having them back."

    Oppositions to child migrants temporarily based at a Devon accommodation centre have angered the local mayor.

    Mayor of Great Torrington Margaret Brown said: "I think maybe it's fear and maybe lack of information so I'm hoping as more information comes out it will quell those fears and people will think 'there but by the grace of God go I'."

    Opponents have been online calling for protests against the arrival of 20 child migrants, all said to be under the age of 18, who were brought from the Jungle in Calais to an accommodation centre near Great Torrington last week.

    An amateur Devon rugby player is seriously ill in an induced coma after he collapsed following a clash of heads in a match.

    Sam Harrison was airlifted to a neurological unit at Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital after he collapsed to the ground five minutes from full time. 

    The 20-year-old had been playing for Newton Abbot’s second XV against Barnstaple at the weekend.

    A man and a woman were attacked and "received various injuries" in the Tesco Car Park, Tolgus Hill in Redruth, say police.
