It follows the recent resignations of the charity's patron and more than 100 volunteer musicians from the community choir and orchestra, set up to raise funds for the project.

The charity, Great Opportunities Together, said the only contact it has had with the commission was to report concerns of a sustained attack suggesting mismanagement, and says it has had no criticism from volunteers.

There are concerns taking down the hotel could destabilise other historic houses and businesses.

An Exeter City Council source told us the buildings were interdependent, with shared roof spaces and overlapping cellars and basements.

The authority says it is determined to make sure no more of Exeter's history will be lost before work on taking down the remains of the Royal Clarence begins.
