    Mayor of Torbay Gordon Oliver has announced how he plans to cut almost £7.5m from next year's budget., external

    Among the plans are putting libraries out to tender, not taking part in the Blue Flag Beach Awards and reducing the funding to lifestyle services, such as helping people lose weight and quit smoking.

    Mayor Oliver says they need to be smarter with their money and find new ways of funding them.

    Plans to save hundreds of millions of pounds on Devon's health services have been published.

    Stroke, maternity, paediatrics and urgent and emergency services need to be urgently reviewed across north east and west Devon, says the CCG.

    It also highlights a number of other vulnerables services, including nuerology, breast services, ear nose and throat, and vascular surgery.  

    The document promises investment in mental health services but also says 900  staff would have to change role.

    There is no specific mention of earlier plans to cut almost one in six acute hospital beds but it does say acute hospitals should be smaller.

    A fine of £30,000 has been imposed on the company which supplied a two tonne door that fell, fatally injuring two men from the Cornish shanty band Fisherman's Friends, at G Live in Guildford.

    Mrs Justice Whipple issued the sentence, the day after a jury of six women and five men found Express Hi-Fold Doors Ltd guilty of a breach of health and safety law. 

    David Naylor, the director and founder of the company, was not at Guildford Crown Court.

    Yesterday he was cleared of two counts of manslaughter by gross negligence, in relation to the deaths of singer Trevor Grills and tour manager Paul McMullen. 

    The men died in February 2013, after being hit by the steel door when it collapsed unexpectedly at the music venue.

    Jersey boss Harvey Biljon makes two changes to the side which earned two bonus points at Yorkshire Carnegie last week for the visit of Cornish Pirates.

    Flanker Gary Graham returns after two months out and replaces player-coach Alex Rae, while Tonga scrum-half Samisoni Fisilau has been passed fit.

    Businesses could have been much worse hit if not for the brave fire fighters that tackled the Royal Clarence Hotel fire in Exeter.

    That's the view of Tim Jones from Devon and Cornwall Business Council as bosses face multi-million pound bills for lost trade and repairs after the fire.

    Tim said: "It could have been more desperate if the fire fighters hadn't staunched the flames when they did so a huge vote of thanks to them - what great guys they are."

    Work on building eight Type 26 frigates at shipyards in Glasgow will start next summer, the defence secretary has said.

    Michael Fallon said the date for cutting the first steel would safeguard hundreds of skilled jobs until 2035.

    He also announced that a contract for two new offshore patrol vessels would be signed shortly, securing jobs before the Type 26 frigate work is under way.

    The MoD has previously said the fleet will be based at Plymouth and Portsmouth.

    Archaeologists are hoping Exeter's Roman past could be unearthed as the fire-hit Royal Clarence Hotel is cleared.

    John Allan from Exeter Cathedral said: "Right in the centre of Exeter is the remains of the old Roman fortress from the 1st Century.

    "We know that the Clarence does preserve Roman deposits of that period."

    He added: "Obviously there's not going to be a big dig but there will have to be work conducted underground and it will likely encounter some archaeology.

    "When the kitchens were changed archaeologists found some nice Roman remains including several floors of Roman buildings - even with grains on the floor and bits of chaff."

    Bee-keepers are being urged to make their own traps to capture Asian Hornets, which can wipe out a bee hive in a couple of hours.

    The hornets have already been found in the Channel Islands and more recently in Gloucestershire and Somerset as well.

    Experts say traps made out of plastic bottles, baited with prawns, can help stop them spreading across the South West.
