    A pre-school in Devon had a lucky escape at the weekend after a stray firework set light to an outdoor play area next to its main building, staff say.

    A passer-by spotted flames coming from the Woodlanders site in Ashburton and called the fire service before managing to put it out himself.

    Woodlanders, which is a charity, said the play area was only recently installed and it would have to raise funds for a new one.

    A neighbour of a woman who died when tonnes of rubble came into her home in Looe has told an inquest the building jolted and the ground dropped in front of him.

    Ground-floor flat occupant Susan Norman died in March 2013 when a landslide hit the building in Sandplace Road, which was split into three apartments.

    Dwayne Bown, who lived in one of the first-floor flats, said he initially thought a tree behind the house may have fallen down.

    He told the hearing: "The only way to get out was the back of the house and, to get to the landing, I had to knock the door down. I then saw mud and water coming down into the landing as I was trying to get out; the entrance was blocked completely and I had to climb over dirt and water and mud to get out."

    The inquest continues.

    A decision on the future of Plymouth's Citadel could be made this week, it is understood.

    There's been speculation about the Ministry of Defence leaving the 19-acre site (pictured), on the city's seafront, which is currently home to the Army's 29 Commando Royal Artillery, external.

    The MoD announced in September that Stonehouse Barracks, headquarters of 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines, was to be sold off.

    The youngest daughter of a Cornish woman who died when a landslide engulfed her home has given evidence at the inquest into her mother's death.

    Mother-of-three Susan Norman, 68, died after water and rubble poured into her home on Sandplace Road, Looe, in the early hours of 22 March 2013.

    Her daughter Rachael Boden said in December 2012 there was an occasion when a "muddy waterfall" was cascading down the wall immediately behind the property so heavily the bricks were obscured. She said soon after this a bulge "like a pregnant lady", appeared in the wall. The inquest continues.

    A Devon council has again appealed for information, external about the theft of a car park pay and display machine with £800 inside it.

    West Devon Borough Council revealed last week that the machine was stolen from the Mill Road car park in Okehampton. 

    As well as costing £3,500 to replace, the theft of the machine left its battery, wires and sharp edges exposed, "causing potential safety risks to the public", the council said.

    A bulge formed in a retaining wall behind a house in the weeks before a woman died in a landslide at the property, an inquest has heard.

    Susan Norman died in March 2013 when tonnes of rubble came into her home in Looe.  

    She lived in the ground-floor flat of a house called Veronica in Sandplace Road, which was split into three apartments and built into the hillside with the retaining wall which rose up behind the property to St Martins Road. The inquest continues.

    Conservationists have taken what's thought to be the first photographs of chimpanzees in part of Africa not widely recognised for its wildlife.

    Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, which runs Paignton Zoo, Living Coasts and Newquay Zoo, is a partner in the Omo-Shasha-Oluwa Forest Initiative, set up to combat the results of deforestation in south west Nigeria.

    The photos, taken by camera traps, are the first firm evidence of the chimps in the region for more than a decade.

    "The survival of chimps and other large mammals in such a threatened forest so close to the huge city of Lagos gives us hope for the Initiative," the trust's Dr Andrew Bowkett said.

    Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale has hailed the performance of 16-year-old Ethan Ampadu in their 3-1 FA Cup first round loss to Luton Town.

    The Wales youth international played in midfield for the first time, and set up City's goal after his shot came off the post and was put in by Reuben Reid.

    "He was brilliant and well done him," Tisdale said of Ampadu, who became City's youngest ever player in August. "It's a real delight to see him play, and you keep forgetting he's only 16."

    Ampadu, who has previously played in central defence for Exeter this season, has been linked to a host of top clubs, external since his debut in an EFL Cup first round win over Championship side Brentford.
