    North Devon's former MP and ex-defence minister Nick Harvey is launching a petition calling for the RMB Chivenor military base to be retained.

    The government announced last week that the base and airfield was to close within the next 10 years as part of a Ministry of Defence plan to free up military sites for housing. 

    Mr Harvey said that "closing RMB Chivenor will be a big blow to the local economy, will impact on local schools and makes no military sense at all". 

    He said he hoped for a similar success to when the base became a Royal Marines barracks after the RAF moved out from the site.

    GWR is doubling the amount it charges for all-day parking at Liskeard railway station, it has announced.

    GWR said the increase from £1 to £2 would "match local car-parks" and represented "the first change to GWR's parking charges for five years".

    The new charges will be in place from 11 December.

    A woman who died as a result of a house fire which took firefighters more than an hour and a half to get to was "inspirational" and a "hard worker", according to tributes.

    Tributes left at the house at the time credited Ms Wigmore as being an "inspirational, kind, gentle and sweet lady".

    She was a founding member of Plymouth Credit Union, according to former colleague Elizabeth Gray. Ms Gray added: "She was a very hard worker and did it as a voluntary. It's a very sad loss."

    Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service confirmed a police investigation was under way and offered its condolences to her family after the "tragic death". A member of its control room staff has been suspended, it is understood.

    A seal pup has been taken to Cornwall's Seal Sanctuary in Gweek after being found a bit underweight and suffering from a small abscess on a flipper, a cove preservation group says.

    The Friends of Portheras Cove said on Facebook , externalthat the pup, nicknamed Panther, had been in and out of the sea "for the past few days" and was being monitored by them.

    They said medics from British Divers Marine Life Rescue managed to give the pup, estimated to be four to five weeks old, a medical assessment before it was decided he would benefit from some time in the sanctuary's hospital unit.

  8. CrossCountry South Devon route cut plans 'to make better use of trains'published at 16:51 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2016

    Train operator CrossCountry says it is considering cutting back a direct service from South Devon to the north of England because it wanted to make "better use of all our available trains".

    Under the new plans proposed in its future timetable consultation, external, the only remaining service would be the 07:00 train from Paignton (pictured) to Manchester Piccadilly. Torbay Conservative MP Kevin Foster has criticised the proposals.

    CrossCountry said it wanted to concentrate its "long distance services on the core network where demand is highest" and it was proposing services between Exeter and Bristol be "almost doubled". It admitted the move would mean a "decrease in the current number of our direct services to and from the Torbay area".

    There's been a fall in the number of complaints made against Devon and Cornwall Police officers, the police watchdog says.

    The Independent Police Complaints Commission said 1,218 complaints were made against the force in 2015/16, a 20% decrease on the year before.

    The total number of appeals made by dissatisfied complainants was 251 - a 2% decrease, it added.

    The Polish flag has been raised above Exeter's Guildhall.

    The move commemorates the Polish 307 Squadron RAF that defended the South West during World War Two.

    The squadron helped to prevent Exeter from being completely destroyed during the Blitz.

    Cornwall Councillor Andrew Mitchell said he's "utterly, utterly sorry" and "embarrassed" to admit that he is the councillor who has received a court summons for non-payment of council tax.

    Mr Mitchell said he offered to step down as leader of the Independent group on Cornwall Council but had so far been supported by other members of the group.

    The new town of Sherford has been discussed for years.

    The development lies to the east of Plymouth, mainly in the South Hams, and will eventually be home to 12,000 people.

    Some of those homes are now on sale, starting at £174,000, but there is concern they are out of the price range of the average wage earner in and around Plymouth.

    Sherford Homes said planning permits stipulated that 20% of the homes should be affordable, in order to meet local needs, and the Sherford Consortium was committed to delivering this. 

    Local authorities confirmed that anyone wanting to be considered for an affordable home would need to apply to Devon Home Choice, and anyone wanting to register for a shared ownership home could do so with Help to Buy South West.

    A Plymouth MP says he will speak to fire service bosses about its response to a blaze in Devon in which a woman died.

    Police are investigating why it took more than an hour and a half from the first emergency call for firefighters to reach the Plymouth home of Molly Wigmore last month.

    Conservative MP for the area, Oliver Colvile, said: "I will be writing to the fire brigade to ask them to explain exactly what happened and what we can do to make sure this doesn't happen again."

    Police are appealing for information, external after two burglaries at sheltered housing bungalows in south Devon.

    Police said items stolen from homes in Parsonage Road in Newton Ferrers on 8 or 9 November were of "particular sentimental value to the victims". 

    They included a silver necklace with a ruby rose (pictured), a heart-shaped opal necklace, a silver opal ring and a Royal Mint Fifth Circulating Coinage Portrait 1st Edition coin set (pictured).

    Police said anyone who might have been offered such items for sale should get in contact.

    Falmouth University - which started off as an art school - has confirmed it is to suspend its foundation diploma in art and design for its 2017 students.

    It said it took the decision "after very serious consideration and as part of its ongoing work to constantly evaluate its course portfolio".

    It added that there was to be a "further period of consultation and discussion before any conclusions about the future of the course are made".

    The institution was founded in 1902, external, eventually becoming a university in 2012.
