    A coroner's inquest, supported by police, is expected to examine whether a delay in tackling a fire played a role in the death of a woman.

    It took more than an hour and a half from the first emergency call for firefighters to reach the Plymouth home of Molly Wigmore last month. Her cat also died in the fire.

    Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, which will also hold an internal investigation when the police inquiry is completed. A member of its control room staff has been suspended, it is understood.

    The fire service said: "The crews involved dealt with an extremely challenging incident. This tragic death is now subject of a police investigation in support of the coroner. We would wish to offer the family of the deceased our deepest condolences."

    Prison officers are holding protests outside jails across England and Wales, including Channings Wood, Dartmoor and Exeter (pictured) in Devon, following a series of violent incidents nationwide.

    Staff are technically not allowed to go on strike, so members of the the Prison Officers' Association union are holding meetings instead of working.

    Association national chairman Mike Rolfe said conditions in jails were unsafe and the Justice Secretary should act. The Ministry of Justice said it had engaged in constructive talks with the union during the past two weeks and there was no justification for the action.

  3. Fatal crash: Investigation after car hits wall on A388published at 10:18 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2016

    A police investigation is under way after a man died when his car hit a wall in Cornwall during the weekend.

    Officers said, external a Volvo estate on the A388 travelling towards Holsworthy hit a wall by the Old Toll House in the Dutson area at about 00:10 on Sunday. 

    The male driver died at the scene. Police have appealed for witnesses.

    Nearly 20 parking ticket machines have been stolen from car parks across Devon and Cornwall, police say.

    In Devon, machines have been stolen in: Bovey Tracey, Brixham, Dawlish, Moretonhampstead, Okehampton, Tavistock and Teignmouth.

    In Cornwall, machines taken were found in Bodmin, Callington, Fowey, Launceston, Liskeard, Newquay, Padstow and Torpoint.

    Officers said that 19 thefts they were currently investigating were far from a prank and, in each case, machines recovered appeared to have been cut from their bases using power tools.

    A knife amnesty has started in Devon and Cornwall, concentrating on so-called "zombie knives".

    Such knives, which are often ornate and feature serrated edges, can be handed in at police enquiry offices without fear of prosecution over the next two weeks, officers said.

    Police said they were concerned such knives - often inspired by horror films and television programmes, and advertised as collectors' items - could end up in the hands of criminals. It has been illegal to sell the weapons since the summer.

    Police are investigating why it took firefighters more than an hour and a half to respond to a blaze in Devon in which a woman died.

    A member of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service's control room staff has been suspended, it is understood.

    The blaze broke out in Molly Wigmore's Plymouth home on 19 October.

    The house, in Sussex Road, is about 1.5 miles from Camels Head Fire Station.

    • 05:17 - First 999 call reports a smoke alarm sounding and a smell of smoke from the property. This should have led to firefighters being sent to the scene

    There's concern about the affordability of the first batch of homes that have been put up for sale in the new town of Sherford in Devon.

    Over the next 20 years, more than 12,000 people are expected to move into the community, which is on the outskirts of Plymouth.

    But despite 20% of the homes being classed as "affordable", critics claim many locals will not be able to afford them, with prices ranging from £174,000-£400,000.

    An £8.5m plan for a hotel at the Eden Project has been submitted to Cornwall Council. 

    It comes just months after the original design was withdrawn because of concerns over its size and visual impact.

    The number of bedrooms in the second design have been reduced by six to 109, but the build price has risen by more than £2m.

    Eden said, external the facility was designed to blend into the countryside and had high standards of energy efficiency and sustainability. If approved, building work would start late next year, and the hotel could open in Spring 2018.

    Two parking ticket machines have been ripped out of a car park and dumped in the river Lynher, near Callington.

    Cornwall Council said the machines cost £4,500 each.

    Police said it was part of a spate of such thefts of parking ticket machines across both Cornwall and Devon.
