    A woman who died after she was rescued from the sea off Cornwall was a holidaymaker from Burton-on-Trent, police say.

    Officers said, external the 36-year-old, who had been visiting Polzeath with friends and family, was reported missing on Sunday.

    An extensive air and sea search was launched at 10:00, and a lifeboat crew pulled her from the water later. She was airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, but confirmed dead on arrival. 

    Police said inquiries into her death were continuing. Officers said they wanted to hear from "anyone who was walking on the coastal path between Polzeath and Daymer Bay" anytime during the evening of Saturday and the morning of Sunday.

    Bad weather could be to blame for thousands of dead fish washing up on a Cornish beach over the weekend, experts have said.

    Visitors to Pentewan Sands said the beach was covered in herring, sardine and mackerel on Saturday. Experts described the event as unusual, especially for the time of year, but suspect recent windy weather could be a factor.

    The dead fish have attracted huge numbers of gulls to the bay on the county's south coast.

    The death of a man whose body was recovered from a river in north Devon is "not thought to be suspicious", police say, external.

    The body, of a man thought to be in his 50s, was recovered from the River Taw, near the Barnstaple Heritage Centre, after it was reported at about 16:00 on Saturday, officers said.

    The man has not yet been formally identified.

    Truro Cathedral says it is halfway to raising the money it needs to replace the roof of the building, thanks partly to a £500,000 grant from the government. 

    The entire project will cost £3.2m and is unlikely to be finished for another three to four years. 

    The latest grant comes from the £20m First World War Centenary Fund, external, which is helping preserve and maintain cathedrals across England.

    Terminally ill patients in South East and North Cornwall can now benefit from 24-hour specialist nursing service provided by St Luke's Hospice Plymouth.

    Some 15 nurses are now sent out to rural areas in Cornwall, as well as Devon, to provide specialist support for end of life care in patients homes. 

    The charity said it hoped not only would it respect people's wishes to die at home, but also free up hospital beds and ease pressure on social care services.

    A new building planned for one of Devon's most iconic islands has been described as a "monstrosity" by the previous owner of the island's hotel.

    The new owners of the Burgh Island Hotel want to build what they're calling a "contemporary suite" teetering on the top of cliffs, overlooking the Mermaid Pool at the back of the island.

    Previous owner Tony Porter said: "It is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and I would have thought that that alone would make it impossible for this architectural design - modern scar, I call it - to be built there."

    The new owners said Devon needed to stay fresh and contemporary if tourism was to survive. South Hams District Council is due to make a decision on the application this month.

    Exeter City Council has backed down on plans to use new powers to prosecute homeless people and confiscate their bedding.

    The authority faced widespread opposition when it asked for views on bringing in a Public Space Protection Order to tackle antisocial behaviour. 

    It's now come up with revised plans that would only use on the spot fines in extreme cases. Controls on street encampments have also been removed from the proposals.

    Flood defence experts are planning to bury a giant barrier in the dunes in a bid to save the Exe Estuary from flooding.

    The old defences, called groynes, have helped protect Dawlish Warren for generations. However, they're no longer up to the job on their own because of rising sea levels and heavy storms. 

    They currently leave the main railway line to London and thousands of homes at risk of flooding.
