Drone and camera technology being tested to spot problems in South West Water (SWW) pipes will pick up problems because of temperature differences caused by leaks, those involved with the project say.

The company's pipes are losing an estimated 80m litres of water a day, enough to fill 32 Olympic-sized swimming pools. It is now experimenting with thermal cameras on drones after research carried out by Exeter University.

Conrad Gillespie, from SWW, said: "We'll be able to see different temperatures signatures, which could potentially detect leakage or problems with pipes."

More funding for Muay Thai would help ensure it "didn't take long" to get the kickboxing martial art into the Olympic arena, a kickboxer from Cornwall says.

The martial art received provisional recognition as an Olympic sport earlier this month, but the earliest it could be in the Games is 2024. 

Twenty-four-year-old Lucy Payne (pictured), reigning WBC featherweight champion, said it would be a "dream" and she would be "overwhelmed" if she got an Olympic opportunity.

She said: "Now that people are talking about it, hopefully we can get some funding behind it. Once you've got the funding, I don't see why it should take very long at all."

Newport County host Plymouth in their FA Cup second round replay with a tie at Premier League's Liverpool the reward for the teams.

Newport earned the replay in a battling 0-0 draw at Plymouth on 3 December.

Pitch covers have been installed at Rodney Parade as Newport seek to avoid the sort of problems that have dogged them in recent times.

With a trip to Liverpool the prize in the third round, staff are battling to protect the playing surface after County had three home games postponed or abandoned this term.

Two men who murdered a man from Falmouth found dead at disused mine have been jailed after their "lies have now finally come undone", police say.

At Truro Crown Court, Kevin Cooper, 35, of Carharrack, and 23-year-old Trewen Kevern, of Falmouth, were both found guilty of murdering of 72-year-old Falmouth man David Alderson (pictured) in 2014. The pair stole more than £30,000 from locked safes and cabinets at their victim's home afterwards.

Det Insp Stuart Ellis said Mr Alderson was killed because he was "generous to those that befriended him and this, ultimately, was his downfall".

He said: "Once it was known that he kept a large amount of cash at his home, a plan was devised to murder him and steal his money". He added that the pair spun a "web of lies ... to cover for Mr Alderson’s disappearance and the acquisition of his money".

A former Royal Marine, due to have an appeal against his conviction of murdering an injured Afghan fighter, was not in court when he was refused bail.

Two judges at the Court Martial Appeal Court in London refused to grant bail to former Devon-based Royal Marine Alexander Blackman - known as Marine A. He is serving a minimum of eight years for murdering an injured Afghan fighter in 2011.

Forty-two-year-old Blackman, who served with 42 Commando, of Taunton, was convicted and jailed in November 2013 by a court martial. His bail hearing followed an announcement by the Criminal Cases Review Commission that his conviction and sentence should be reviewed.

Blackman watched the bail proceedings via video link from jail. However, his wife, Claire, was in the packed courtroom with dozens of supporters.

The murderer of a "vulnerable, elderly" pensioner in a "brutal and sustained" attack at a disused mine working in Cornwall went back to his victim's home and ransacked locked safes and cabinets, taking more than £30,000 in cash.

At Truro Crown Court, Kevin Cooper, 35, of Carharrack, and Trewen Kevern, 23, of Falmouth, were both jailed for life for murdering of 72-year-old David Alderson. Their victim's body was found face down in a pond at disused mine workings near Bissoe in Cornwall in January 2014.

Mr Cooper ransacked Mr Alderson's home after having previously been given £1,000 by his victim when he was down on his luck a year before the murder, the court was told. Judge Mr Justice Popplewell said the knowledge Mr Alderson kept larger amounts at home drove the pair to murder him. 

Cooper immediately spent about £6,000 before going on the run, the court heard.

At Truro Crown Court, Kevin Cooper, 35, of Carharrack, and 23-year-old Trewen Kevern, of Falmouth, were both found guilty of murdering of 72-year-old Falmouth man David Alderson.

It was the second time they faced the charges. Cooper successfully appealed against a guilty verdict returned in the case in May 2015. Kevern was always due to go on trial again after the jury failed to reach a verdict at that previous hearing.

Former Devon-based Royal Marine Sgt Alexander Blackman, who is serving life after being found guilty of murdering an injured Afghan fighter in 2011, is refused bail, pending a new conviction challenge at the Court Martial Appeal Court in London.

At Truro Crown Court, 23-year-old Trewen Kevern, of Falmouth, and Kevin Cooper, 35, of Carharrack, were both jailed for life for murdering of 72-year-old David Alderson. 

Their victim's body was found face down in a pond at disused mine workings near Bissoe in Cornwall in January 2014, and more than £30,000 taken from locked safes and cabinets in his home afterwards.

Judge Mr Justice Popplewell said that because Trewen's sister, Tammy, was to be the beneficiary, Trewen thought he would benefit from Mr Alderson's death "in that way too".

A proposed cut in the number of members of the Council of the Isles of Scilly follows "public consultation on its draft proposals earlier this year", the Local Government Boundary Commission for England says.

It has proposed that 16 councillors should be elected to the Council of the Isles of Scilly in the future - five fewer than currently sitting. 

It also recommended that 12 councillors should represent St Mary's, and one councillor "elected to each of the four off-islands" - St Martin's, St Agnes, Bryher, and Tresco. 

If approved, the new arrangements would "come into force at the council elections in 2017", the commission said.

Two men "brutally murdered" a pensioner to steal money, a judge says.

Thirty-five-year-old Kevin Cooper, of Carharrack, and Trewen Kevern, 23, of Falmouth, were both found guilty at Truro Crown Court of murdering of 72-year-old David Alderson. His body was found face down in a pond at disused mine workings near Bissoe in Cornwall in January 2014.

Judge Mr Justice Popplewell said the pair lured weapons collector Mr Cooper to the quarry on a pretext of arranging a deal for him to buy guns. They then hit him over the head and drowned him to gain access to a safe at his home which had tens of thousands of pounds in it.

Their victim "put up a fight", the court heard, and neither of the killers had "shown the slightest remorse" and blamed each other for the actual killing.
