    A Royal Marine found guilty of murdering an injured Afghan fighter in 2011 is due to ask leading judges later to free him from jail because he is due to make an appeal against his conviction.

    A bail application by 42-year-old Sergeant Alexander Blackman, formerly of Plymouth-based 42 Commando, was heard last Friday, but Lord Chief Justice Lord Thomas and Mr Justice Openshaw adjourned the case until today.

    The Criminal Cases Review Commission referred Blackman's conviction and sentence to the Court Martial Appeal Court for review. 

    Blackman, of Taunton in Somerset, was convicted in November 2013 by a court martial in Bulford, Wiltshire, and sentenced to life with a minimum term of 10 years. It was later cut to eight years.

    A Devon housing estate has been split in two by a fence because of a 1ft height difference each side.

    Anyone driving down Carhaix Way in Dawlish has to take a detour of almost two miles. 

    Developers on both sides of the fence are adamant they followed the plans - but it's a strain for residents who are missing out on deliveries. 

    Planning authority Teignbridge District Council and roads authority Devon County Council are getting together in the new year to try and sort it out.

    Drone and camera technology is being tested to spot leaks in South West Water's pipes, which are losing an estimated 80m litres of water a day.

    The company uses optical cameras from the sky to assess sites and do surveys. But now, with the help of scientific trials at Exeter University, they plan to mount small thermal cameras on to drones to see through the ground and pinpoint leaks in the pipes.

    A former Devon-based Royal Marine from Taunton, convicted of the murder of a Taliban fighter in 2011, is due to have an application for bail go before the Court of Appeal later.

    Forty-two-year-old former Devon-based Royal Marine Alexander Blackman, who served with 42 Commando, of Taunton - known as Marine A - was convicted and jailed in November 2013 by a court martial of murdering an injured Afghan fighter in 2011.  

    The bail application was due to be heard last week, but was delayed.
