    A victim of a burglar who was filmed on CCTV raiding a home in north Devon was left with "a significant impact on her health" as result of the crime, police say, external.

    Ross Wyborn, from Barnstaple, was captured on CCTV trying to burgle a house on Salem Street in the town in September, whilst the occupants were asleep inside.

    The 22-year-old was jailed for 876 days after pleading guilty at Exeter Crown Court on Thursday.

    Det Con Terry Hodgson, from Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "It is my hope that the sentence given by the court helps her to recover from the incident and to once again feel safe in her own home."

    A stabbing victim in Plymouth was found to have suffered knife wounds after he approached two Police Community Support Officers operating a cordon at the scene of a nearby fire, police say.

    The 31-year-old man was taken to Derriford Hospital after he approached the PCSOs in Albert Road in the Stoke area. He is in a critical condition.

    Officers said inquiries led to a property in Exmouth Road - about a third of a mile away - "where it is believed the assault took place".

    Two men, aged 58 and 46, are awaiting questioning after being arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

    The South West is to get £20m earmarked to help areas of England with high levels of second-home ownership because people who provide vital services - including lifeboats - often can't afford to live where they are needed, a minister says.

    The region accounted for 21% of all such property ownership in England, and the money would go into providing "affordable" housing for first-time buyers in places where demand was high, the government. It has been raised through increases in stamp duty.

    Housing Minister Gavin Barwell said Cornwall had particular problems.

    He said: "I was looking at a couple of coastal towns in villages where it's a huge issue.

    "People were saying to me we need someone to man the lifeboat, and people can't afford any of the homes that are in the village. It's a problem that needs addressing."

    Exeter City boss Paul Tisdale says he would not be surprised if offers come in for striker Ollie Watkins during next month's transfer window.

    Joel Sawyer, from Exbourne in west Devon, raised hundreds of pounds by completing two sponsored bike rides and donating his pocket money. 

    The defibrillator, which can be used to treat people having a cardiac arrest, has just been installed outside the local community shop.

    One of two small terriers who ran off after a car crash near Lostwithiel has been found, the owner's niece says.

    The pair of Jack Russells - Snowy and Dexter - are brothers and were travelling with Linda Camborne-Paynter when her car flipped at Sweetshouse last night.  

    Dexter has been found, Tiena Shiraishi said on Facebook, external. Snowy is still missing. 

    Ms Camborne-Paynter remains in hospital with two broken arms.

    A second 24-hour strike by contract cleaners on the Great Western Railway is under way.

    Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union employed by Servest UK began the industrial action at 06:00 GMT. The union claims agency workers should be made permanent GWR staff and that there is currently a "two tier" system. 

    The dispute involves almost 200 workers who also walked out on 16 December. 

    GWR said it was aware of the strike and that rail services were expected to run as scheduled.

    Nearly 700 staff working across Devon's acute hospitals and in the ambulance service were physically assaulted at work last year. 

    New figures show there were 518 attacks on staff at hospitals in Exeter, Barnstaple, Plymouth and Torbay in 2015-16, plus 160 assaults on ambulance staff in the same period. 

    Jeannett Martin, from the Royal College of Nursing in the South West, said such incidents were unacceptable. She added that the figures could be higher as many staff didn't attacks.
