The Post Office is to close and franchise a further 37 of its flagship Crown offices, with the loss of 300 staff, and cut 127 financial specialist roles, workers have been told.

The Communication Workers Union said on top of the 62 branches announced for closure and franchise in 2016, the job cuts brings more "misery" to Post Office workers and the customers they serve.

General secretary Dave Ward said: "The latest round of closures is further evidence that the Post Office is in crisis and that the board of the company, backed by the government, is simply pursuing a strategy of slash and burn."

Roger Gale, Sales and Trade Marketing Director, said: "We're committed to maintaining the Post Office's special place on the high street and the changes we are making underpin our continued commitment to give communities in every part of the country access to essential services.

The Post Office has announced plans to seek "partners" for the following branches in Cornwall:

    • Camborne, 15 Chapel Street TR14 8EQ
    • Redruth, 61 Fore Street TR15 2AA

None have been earmarked in Devon.

  8. 'Misleading' to make fried food and fizzy drinks targets of anti-obestity drivepublished at 12:14 Greenwich Mean Time 10 January 2017

    Press Association

It is misleading to focus public health campaigns on tackling obesity by targeting fried food and fizzy drinks, according to scientists.

As many seek to battle the festive bulge in January, a new study has challenged previous findings that any single aspect of diet or lifestyle can be addressed to reduce the risk of obesity in adults.

Researchers at the University of Exeter found instead many fattening aspects of the environment, lifestyle and behaviour interact with a person's genes to influence his or her waistline - and the strongest influence is poverty.

In the UK, obesity affects around one in every four adults and one in every five children aged 10 to 11, according to the NHS. Being obese increases risk of developing type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, some cancers and stroke.
