    Cycling campaigners in Exeter say the only way to relieve the city's notorious congestion is by creating a network of cycle routes that are safe to use

    About 88,000 commuters hit the roads of the city every morning - and that figure is likely to nearly double over the next decade. 

    Jules Denning cycles into work in Exeter from Exmouth every morning - because it's quicker than using the car.

    She said: "If you feel less confident about cycling it will put you off so having a safe place for people to cycle would be a really positive thing."

    A theatre in Paignton has stepped in to help a touring production which was due to start its national tour in North Devon.

    The Palace Theatre heard that Swansea Opera was without a venue after the Queens Theatre in Barnstaple closed last week. 

    The show will now take place at the Palace theatre. North Devon Council, which owns the Queens Theatre and The Landmark Theatre in Ilfracombe, has said it's committed to reopening the venues and will look at how the theatres are funded in the longer term.

    Steps to re-establish a helicopter link between mainland Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly have moved a step closer today.

    Cornwall Council has approved a plan to allow a new heliport to be built in Penzance on land just behind the old heliport, subject to conditions.

    If it goes ahead there could be 17 flights a day in the summer.

    The man behind the scheme, Robert Dorrien-Smith from Tresco Estates, said since British International Helicopter pulled out in 2012, tourism on the islands had been badly affected. 

    At the moment, the link between the islands and the mainland is covered by a seasonal ferry and fixed wing planes.

    A pensioner who has been jailed for attempted murder says he "lost his temper" with his victim.

    Plymouth Crown Court heard how Michael Wilkes, 71, had been driving his friend Lynette Newell along the B3303 in Camborne when he lost his temper with her, and stabbed her repeatedly with a fruit knife.

    Defending, Jo Martin said: "He went into a kind of black fog. This was completely out of character."

    Wilkes - who described Mrs Newell as his "best friend" - has been sentenced to six years and eight months in prison.

    A large amount of jewellery has been stolen from an Exmouth home.

    Offenders got inside the property in Valley Way at some point between 24-26 January.

    Police said items of "huge sentimental value" which were stolen include a 100-year-old 18ct gold ring with diamonds and an 18ct pearl and amethyst ring which is around 70-years-old, plus a very old garnet bracelet and set of garnet earrings.

    A pensioner has pleaded guilty to attempted murder after stabbing a friend in the neck several times.

    Michael Wilkes, 71, of Nancegollan, Helston, attacked Lynette Newell with a small fruit knife.

    Wilkes had been acting as an unofficial carer to Mrs Newell, who suffers from serious medical conditions, Plymouth Crown Court heard.

    Mrs Newell has been left "scarred, scared and traumatised".

    Investigating Officer DC Ella Clarke said Mrs Newell's life was saved thanks to an "incredible response from officers at Camborne Police station".

    Figures out today claim that one in four people in the South West wouldn't call 999 if they saw someone who was having the first symptom of a stroke.

    Public Health England is launching its Act FAST campaign, external saying that a quarter of those asked said they'd wait to call an ambulance because they wrongly believe they need to see two or more symptoms of a stroke before making the call.

    Since Act FAST launched in 2009, an additional 38,600 have got to hospital within the vital three-hour window meaning that stroke sufferers receive the immediate medical treatment required.

    The Brighton pair, aka Mike Kerr (vocals and bass) and Ben Thatcher (drums), caused a major splash with their self-titled debut album in 2014, with many critics and fans lauding them as the saviours of British rock music.

    The record was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2014. In 2015, Royal Blood won Best British Group at the BRIT Awards, Best Live Band and Best New Band at the NME Awards, Best Live Act at the Q Awards and Best British Newcomer at the Kerrang! Awards. Need we say more?

    Work has started on the multi-million pound project to protect Dawlish Warren from sea level rise.

    The Warren sits at the mouth of the Exe estuary and acts as a natural flood defence for around 3,000 homes and the railway line to London. 

    Some existing defences have already been removed. Later this year the Environment Agency has plans to protect the most vulnerable stretch of the dunes.

    An 18-year-old man stabbed in Truro has "life-changing injuries" say police.

    Officers investigating the knife attack at Baynards Close at 16:50 on Wednesday said the man was helped by a passer-by who gave first aid before police applied pressure to the wound until paramedics arrived.

    The man was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital where he remains.

    Police are appealing for witnesses.

    A rope-wielding man chased a terrified woman through a park as she walked her dog, police have said.

    The victim was walking at Duncombe Park in Kingsbridge at 06:15 when the man ran after her - all the way to her front door before making off.

    The large muscular man is about 6ft tall with stubble or a short beard. He was wearing a black hooded top and grey jogging bottoms.

    "At this stage we do not know the motive or reason for this incident," said police who are hunting the man.

    Police advise walkers to carry mobile phones and an alarm if possible.

    Patients in north Devon can now access a brand new renal facility in Barnstaple to undergo their life-saving kidney dialysis treatment.

    The opening of the satellite renal unit was officially marked by staff and patients from the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust.

    The new unit replaces existing facilities in South Molton, which no longer meet the needs of the growing service.

    The purpose-built facility at Roundswell includes 20 state-of-the-art dialysis stations which can provide treatment for up to 60 patients a day.
