    Two friends were given suspended sentences after a live goldfish was swallowed in a drink-fuelled dare called Neknominate.

    Daniel Challis was dared to eat the fish and did it despite not being "overly keen", Plymouth Magistrates Court heard.

    His friend Cheryl Stevens made a video of the 24-year-old swallowing the fish and posted it onto Facebook.

    Plymouth magistrates court heard some people were "disgusted" by their actions and tipped off the RSPCA. 

    Challis and Stevens were jailed for 18 weeks, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid work.

    Tonight the rain will continue to clear and it will become mainly dry apart from an isolated shower.     The stormy conditions today have caused serious damage to sea defences in one Cornish town.

    Porthleven's wooden harbour defences were broken after huge waves crashed into the structure.

    They were previously smashed in the major storms of 2014.

    A rare Little Bunting has been spotted at Trinity Hill nature reserve near Axminster.

    Little Buntings are rarely seen in the UK, they breed in the far North East of Europe and across Northern Asia, typically spending winter in Southern Asia, China and India.

    Easterly winds, which dominated autumn 2016, resulted in only a few being detected in the UK.

    Weekly rubbish collections in Torridge could be scrapped.

    The council says it's the only authority in Devon that still collects rubbish every week and its affecting recycling rates.

    It's proposing fortnightly rubbish collections instead. The council will also offer everyone a fortnightly garden waste collection costing an extra £35 a year.

    There will be a "band of locally heavy rain moving east" tonight which "may lead to some travel disruption" according to the Met Office which has updated its weather warning, external for the region.

    The Met Office said: "This could include localised problems for high-sided vehicles on prone routes and roads affected by spray and standing water."

    A Royal Marine has admitted hoarding explosives and making bombs for a Northern Ireland-related terror attack.

    Ciarán Maxwell, 31, of Exminster, Devon, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to preparation of terrorist acts between January 2011 and August 2016.

    According to the charge details, he had a stash of explosives in purpose-built hides in England and Northern Ireland.

    He compiled a library of terrorism documents, including instructions on how to make explosives and tactics used by terrorist organisations.

    He also had maps, plans and lists of potential targets for a terrorist attack and images of an adapted Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) pass card and a PSNI uniform.

    Royal Marine Ciarán Maxwell, 31, of Exminster, Devon, has pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to preparing for a terrorist attack by stashing explosives in purpose-built caches in England and Northern Ireland.

    Maxwell was arrested last year after police found two arms dumps in County Antrim linked to dissident republicans. Appearing by video link at the Old Bailey, Maxwell admitted assisting another to commit acts of terrorism between 2011 and 2016.

    New plans have been revealed to turn redundant fortification Drake's Island in Plymouth Sound into a luxury hotel, spa and restaurant.

    Also included in the plans by Rotolok are an "educational visitor experience" on the island "to address the outstanding environmental issues and secure a future for this exciting development".

    Environmental issues have been a stumbling block in previous applications by the firm.

    Sean Swales of Rotolok said: "We fully appreciate the environmental concerns that have been raised in the past and hope we have managed, in this application, to respond to these and find acceptable solutions."

    Western Power says the weather remains challenging for their crews who are attempting to restore power to 3,000 customers across the network.

    It hopes to restore all supplies to the city by 16:00.

    Householders will be forking out more on their council tax bills to pay for 100 more officers in Devon and Cornwall.

    The Police and Crime Panel approved an increase in council tax to help pay for the extra coppers for the Devon and Cornwall force. Households in a band D property will pay an extra £3.40 a year.

    There was criticism from some members that the police were taking a huge risk by reducing the number of PCSO's by 200, but the chief constable said without any extra funding it was unavoidable.

    Police are appealing for help locating a unique motorcycle, external that was stolen in Newquay.

    It is believed the property on Belmont Place was entered between 03:45 and 04:45 on Tuesday and the keys to the motorcycle and a Playstation 4 with two controllers were taken.

    The motorcycle was taken from outside the house along with a white and black Airoh brand helmet with ‘License to ride’ written on both sides.

    A town clerk accidentally opened an email containing a virus that wiped council documents all the way back to 2015.

    The email for Tiverton Town Council in Devon claimed to be from a parcel delivery firm and infected all the council's computers.

    "Unfortunately I pressed the button and immediately I could tell there was something wrong because the actual machine started to shake," said John Vanderwolfe.

    "Within a few minutes it had encrypted all our data which means of course that we can't get hold of it.

    "It's what's called a ransom email which tells you that if you pay a large sum of money they will de-encrypt it for you but there's no guarantee of that."

    Most of the lost documents are letters - finance and planning documents were saved because they are on another system.

    But the lost letters could take months to rescan and upload.

    The RSPB's most recent bird crime survey reveals there were 10 incidents of illegal cruelty to birds of prey in the South West.

    This buzzard, above, shot by an airgun, was found recently in Tedburn St Mary, near Exeter.

    It was put down after a pellet was found lodged in its foot. And this X-ray, below, shows a buzzard found near Bridgewater in Somerset which had been shot and killed.
