    A project to recognise an "innovative, influential and successful musician" from Cornwall who is no longer with us, or a "significant location" in the county, has generated dozens of suggestions.

    The deadline for the Blue Plaque suggestions was last night, and a panel is now working on a short list.

    Ideas include:

    • The Hall for Cornwall - where Queen played their first gig
    • The Beatles - who took their Magical Mystery Tour to Newquay
    • Cornwall Coliseum
    • Sawmills Recording studios

    The official BBC guidance says: “The Blue Plaque commemorates innovative, influential and successful people who’re no longer with us. 

    "For BBC Music Day this could be a singer, musician, songwriter or producer from ANY genre of music. They can also celebrate significant locations which are a big part of our musical heritage (for example iconic venues & important events)."

    Newquay is to create a  team of workers , external to improve dilapidated areas of the town following a backlash over the neglect of facilities in the resort.

  4. Family 'delighted' to buy shipwreck hero's tankardpublished at 17:34 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    The great great great great granddaughter of a man who rescued the crew of a shipwrecked Norwegian ship says she is "delighted" to have bought a tankard he was awarded by the King of Norway.

    Henry Cuttance's tankard was amongst items  auctioned in Penzance over the weekend .

    Sue Morgan said: "We are really delighted. We are quite a big family. To get back a piece of history is lovely."

    The family paid £8,100 for the lot, and hope to be able to keep it in Cornwall.

  5. Residents urged to clean up Teignbridgepublished at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    Councillors are calling on Teignbridge residents to ‘do their bit’ to help clear up litter as part of the Great British Spring Clean.

    The new scheme runs from 3 March to 5 March and aims to bring together to clear litter in towns, villages, countryside and coastline across the country

    Councillor Kevin Lake from Teignbridge District Council said: “We encourage as many groups, individuals and organisations as possible to take part." 

    "There’s lots of events taking place across Teignbridge and we hope people get involved.”

    Community events are planned for Sandringham and Decoy Parks on 3 March, Whitestone, Abbotskerswell and Ashburton on 4 March, and Bishopsteignton on 5 March.

    Cornwall will continue its bid to be a European Capital of Culture. 

    The controversial decision was passed by an eight to one majority, by members of the council's cabinet. 

    The cost for the initial process as been confirmed as £336,000. Supporters claim it will be good for the whole county if Truro wins.

    But others believe it's a waste of precious resources at a time of budget cuts. 

    Umea in Sweden won the title in 2014 and the man who led their bid, Frederick Linda-Gren, told BBC Radio Cornwall about the benefits. He said the following year "hotel bookings went up by 24 percent and the interest in coming to the city to have conferences and to explore the culture has increased".

    A weather warning for ice has been issued by the Met Office , external for East Cornwall and most of Devon for this evening and tomorrow morning.

    A Met Office spokesman said: "Ice is expected to form during Monday evening and overnight leading to difficult driving conditions on untreated roads and slippery conditions on pavements."

  8. Man charged with assaulting police officerpublished at 16:05 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    A man has appeared at Plymouth Magistrates' Court charged with causing actual bodily harm against a special police constable in Plymouth.

    The 23-year-old from near Liskeard has been remanded on unconditional bail and will appear again to enter a plea on 20 March.

    He had previously been charged with attempted murder and maliciously causing gross bodily harm, but both charges have been withdrawn.

    The incident happened at Plymouth train station on Saturday evening. 

  9. Nowell scores twice for Englandpublished at 15:42 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    Cornwall's Jack Nowell scored twice for England as they beat a determined and crafty Italy side in the Six Nations yesterday .

    The Exeter Chiefs wing came on the 56th minute and made a significant impact, meaning England have won their first three games and top the table.

  10. Body found at quarry as police end search for missing personpublished at 15:26 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    A body has been found at a quarry near Berry Head in South Devon.

    Police said they have called off the search for a missing person after the body was found on Sunday.

    Jacqueline Hudson's next of kin have been told, although police said formal identification has not yet been carried out.

  12. Three rescued from vehicle that left road, rolled and landed in ditch published at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2017

    Three people have been rescued from a vehicle that left a road, rolled and landed in a ditch in North Cornwall.

    The crash happened in St Thomas Hill, Launceston at about 13:40.

    Police, ambulance and the fire service attended the crash. It is not known what condition the three people are in.

    Wildlife enthusiasts are still watching the coastline off Slapton this lunchtime in the hope of spotting a humpback whale.

    The creature was first seen feeding in Start Bay last Friday and people have been flocking to the area to try to catch a glimpse.

    Lindy Hingley has been running Brixham Seawatch for 26 years and said: "This is the very first humback I've had."

    She went on to say there have previously been sightings of minke, killer and fin whales in the area.

    Former heroin addict John Clarke, 47, has just started his first job in 30 years, after going to prison many times. 

    The Londoner, who now lives in Devon, was addicted to heroin for nearly 25 years, but says he has been clean for three years. 

    Now he's won a short-term contract as a support worker at Exeter's homeless hostel and he says it's turned his life around.

    Researchers - including those from the University of Exeter - found that people living in neighbourhoods with more birds were less likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and stress. 

    As Tom Singleton explains, the findings apply to people from different ages and backgrounds, and is true whether they live in urban or rural areas.

    NHS England is investigating whether any patients have been harmed by an administrative mix-up .  

    About 500,000 documents containing medical information were mistakenly put in storage rather than being sent to GPs or filed in the patients' records.

    An investigation is under way into the error which happened between 2011 and 2016, in the East Midlands, the South West and north-east London.

    So far, no harm has been reported.

    Police investigating a hate crime have released a photo of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the incident.

    A man is alleged to have racially insulted a young Muslim woman while waiting at a bus stop on Sidwell Street, in Exeter, at the end of January.

    Officers believe the man pictured could assist them with their investigation.
