    A special police constable is out of hospital and recovering at home after being assaulted in Plymouth on Saturday evening.

    British Transport Police say a man has been charged with attempted murder following the incident which happened at Plymouth train station at around 19:45 GMT.

    The officer was on duty at the time.

    The 23-year-old man is due to appear at Plymouth Magistrates' Court today.

    Cornwall councillors have voted to go ahead with an ambitious bid to try and make Truro the European Capital of Culture in 2023.

    The cabinet voted eight to one in favour of the bid, which had previously been reviewed by a scrutiny committee.

    The estimated cost to the taxpayer for the application is more than half a million pounds.

    Critics argue it's a waste of money at a time when budgets are tight. 

    Will Coleman from the company behind last year's successful Man Engine Project thinks Cornwall is well placed. He said: "Cornwall Council is saying this is a small amount of money and we can do something that matters."

    A man has been charged with the attempted murder of a special constable in Plymouth.

    A 23-year-old man from the Liskeard area has been charged with one count of attempted murder after an incident at Plymouth train station at around 19:45 GMT on Saturday. 

    He is due to appear at Plymouth Magistrates' Court this morning.

    Cornwall Council says the amount it will spend on a bid to make Truro the European Capital of Culture in 2023 is £336,000.

    This is lower than the £500,000 previously estimated.

    The council has voted in favour of the bid by eight votes to one.

    Councillors have voted in favour of Truro's bid for European Capital of Culture in 2023. Eight councillors voted in favour, only one - councillor Andrew Wallis - voted against.

    Council tax in Plymouth could rise by up to 5%.

    It means bills for the average band D household could go up by £67 a year.

    The authority said more than half of this will be spent on social care. Somerset, Dorset, Cornwall and Devon have already voted in similar rises. 

    The city council is meeting today to plan its budget.

    Repair work on an incinerator roof damaged by Storm Doris is expected to start today.

    Insulation material was blown from the roof as the storm hit the South West last Thursday and Friday.

    SUEZ Recycling and Recovery UK said a 20m x 5m piece of the roof at the St Dennis site was damaged.

    Staff were sent out to help collect the material that had blown from the Cornwall Energy Recovery Centre (CERC). A crane and replacement panels have been ordered and the firm hopes to begin repairs today.

    A body has been found at a quarry near Berry Head in South Devon.

    Police said they have called off the search for a missing person after the body was found on Sunday.

    Jacqueline Hudson's next of kin have been told, although police said formal identification has not yet been carried out.

    Work to strengthen the sea wall in Teignmouth "for the next 75 years" begins today.

    Those behind the scheme say it will cost £1.3m and will help protect more than 400 properties in the resort from coastal flooding.

    Councillor Humphrey Clemens from Teignbridge District Council said: "This work is really important and will help reduce the flood risk to homes and businesses. 

    "The existing structure nearest the sea has weathered many a stormy battering and is coming to the end of its useful life." 

    The work to strengthen the sea wall should be completed by the end of June.

    A tankard that was awarded to a Cornishman for his "brave and noble" actions after rescuing four men from a vessel that smashed into cliffs, has been bought by members of his family.

    Henry Cuttance led an interesting life - he was both the landlord of the Ship Inn at Gunwalloe on the Lizard and a smuggler, and he rescued a ship's master and three other men from the Norwegian vessel.

    He was given the tankard by the King of Norway, which members of the Cuttance family thought was lost.

    But they have now got it back. They paid £8,100, well over it's guide price (£5,500) at an auction in Penzance over the weekend.

    Doctors in Cornwall are trying to stop people with long term medical conditions becoming addicted to strong painkillers. 

    A new scheme has been launched involving contracts being drawn up between GPs and their patients to better manage medication.

    It comes after clinicians noticed a rise in patients being admitted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital with signs of addiction.
