    BBC Spotlight

We'll be able to make a call from 98% of the UK from at least one mobile provider by the end of this year, the government says.

Today there's a debate being led by Devon MP Neil Parish, amid claims the South West has the worst mobile coverage in the UK after Wales.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport told the BBC that it's a legal requirement for each mobile provider to provide coverage for at least 90% of the UK by the end of 2017.

    Mobile phone masts

A spokesman said: "We are taking further action through the Digital Economy Bill currently going through Parliament, which will give the regulator Ofcom the power to issue hefty fines to mobile phone companies who fail to deliver improvements.

"We're also making it easier and cheaper to roll out new mobile infrastructure to help tackle not-spots and deliver the connectivity people need, wherever they are in the country."

Two days after we broke the news the only care home on the Isles of Scilly is to shut - there's a new plan to try to keep it open.

The residents of Park House were told not enough staff could be found to keep it open and they'd have to find care on the mainland.

    Park House

But, at a packed meeting on St Mary's last night, a new suggestion was put forward - to pay staff more money.

Councillor Gordon Bilsborough said: "I feel more optimistic than I did that we can fix the new pay scales very quickly, and get the adverts out very quickly.

"We can't keep talking about it, it must be done as soon as possible. I'm talking about two or three weeks, not months."

  15. School funding: Winners and losers in shake-uppublished at 09:19 Greenwich Mean Time 22 March 2017

    Daniel Wainwright

Individual schools will lose or gain hundreds of thousands of pounds in the first year of the biggest shake-up of school funding in England for decades.

Official figures released as the part of consultation on the changes show 9,045 schools will lose money while 10,653 will get more.

The Department for Education (DfE) is trying to end what it refers to as an "historic postcode lottery in funding".

Education secretary Justine Greening says the old system is "unfair" as similar schools can get different levels of funding with "little or no justification".

The consultation , external on the changes closes on Thursday.

The DfE said the proposals would ensure "every pound of the investment we make in education has the greatest impact".

    Johnny O'Shea
    BBC News Online

The undersea cable taking mains power to the Isles of Scilly was damaged by an "unidentified boat", according to Western Power Distribution.

The damage was done at the beginning of March. Since then the islands have been relying on generators for their electricity.

A specialist cable recovery vessel has been investigating the damage and it's hoped repairs can start on Friday.

Jon Nesbitt, Distribution Manager with Western Power Distribution said: "Unfortunately working at least 10 miles from land in the ocean, this repair is both complex and challenging as we have to work around tide times and deal with storm force gales.

"We want to reassure our customers that there is a constant supply of fuel for the generators and we have provided an extra two megawatts of power through mobile generators should it be required."
